Engine swap, what I need to change?

Post by smallan »

Right guys, I just need a little help with my engine conversion.

I'm going to be swapping my Mk2 GT2 EX weber carbed engine with a Mk2 GTX DX fuel injected engine. I've got a donor car and have stripped out the Engine and Gearbox along with all ancilleries, all wiring (engine, front, dash and rear loom along with fuse box), took the petrol tank as it had the fuel pump and other bits attached, MFA clocks.

Is there any other bits I need?
Which bits will I not need to use?
Will I need to swap the dash loom, clocks and fuse box or will the engine loom just plug straight into my original fusebox?

Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers
Sam

you could strip all the ancilliaries off the old engine and bolt them up to the new one, then bolt the engine in and drive.
OR
use the engine AND ancilliaries from the new engine, all the wiring will just plug in to your existing fusebox.

either way, get it done! :yup:

do I really want a carb'd valver? answers on a postcard...

Fuel lines if you haven't got them already. They are a larger bore than carb ones.

That's the main thing I wasn't sure about if it would just plug straight in to the original fusebox box. Which looms will I have to change? Obviously the engine loom but what about dash for the MFA clocks or do I stick with original? Take it the front loom to lights and rear to fuel tank will be same?

I've cut the fuel lines off either end on donor car so I have the end then I'm going to replace with rubber fuel line or something similar just for ease of routing then from tank to fuel filter in engine bay.

One other thing do you need the bracket for air box and washer battle and put them in my car?

If you are planning on using the injection clocks and MFA stalk (post 84 cars) then you will require the injection dash loom also. Its simply easier to transplant the entire injection looms and fusebox.

Front loom to lights is slightly different on the injection, it carries the longer feed for the washer pump and the ambient temp sensor.
Ditto for rear loom, the injection rear loom has the feed for in-tnk pump (post 84 cars) and the main pump.

If you would like a near factory conversion, then you will need to drill the spot welds on the air box and washer fluid bottle brackets and weld them in place on your car.
