Ive got an early injection with a set of clocks that has the MPG and gear change indicator in the middle at the top and the coolant temp on the rev counter.

My coolant temp and all the vaccuume functions dont work on mine. Im most interested in getting the coolant temp working but a fully working MFA would also be nice.

Will any other set of clocks be interchangable as the ones with the coolant temp in the middle at the top seem a lot more common.

Also do the same clocks from MK2 and MK1 golfs fit as long as they have the two plugs?

The MK1 Golf with MFA and gear change indicator has a different layout, if I remember rightly the temperature gauge is in a differet place, not within the rev counter. Have you tried getting yours to work? I would change every vacumn hose, the brake light switch and the switch that is connected to the ddizzy with a vacumn hose. Are you aware that there is also a relay, which is quite common on many VW's of the era.

You could look for a clock set from a Storm, GTI (1.8) or an early GTX.

Its the temp sender I am most interested in getting working. Im not too fussed about the layout of the clocks as long as it all works.

What about the Mk2 clocks they look similar and some have the same 2 plugs,

The vacume hoses are all ok though and my brake light switch works.

Does the relay effect the temp sender though?

Ive got contunuity for the wiring from the clock to the temp sensor and earthing it does nothing. I followed the FAQ on changing the warning bulbs to take the clocks apart but didnt know what to do from there and put them back together again.

Ive got a decent multimeter and a battery, im just no good with wiring diagrams, if someone knows how to test them I'd be more than greatful for a heads up.

My mistake, not brake light switch, that should read reversing light switch, it's a multi-pin plug and also works with the gear change indicator.
Check your earth strap to the block from the coil, that can give some strange syntoms if it is missing.

How many earths should I have to the Rocker cover, I have a large strap like one and a small thin wire.

Just checked and the earth from the coil bracket is connected.

Yeh tahts what Ive got cool.

With regards to the gearbox switch, will that affect the temp guage and the MFA functions or just the gear change indicator.

You could have a couple of faults, have you checked the temperature sender, I think yours is 049 919 501?

Have you read the FAQ - "How to check the coolant (water) temperature gauge", in order to see whether it is the sender, wiring or gauge that is at fault.

The gearbox switch will only affect the gear change indicator.

There is also an FAQ describing MFA faults, which should help you narrow down which bit is not working.

Ive checked the temp sender and the wiring and both are not at fault.

Not putting too much effort into investigating the MFA yet as if the temp gauge is shot ill end up replacing the whole lot anyway.

Turns out the early Mk2s had different clocks to all the others, brilliant....

Managed to swap the temp guage out of a later set into mine so I have that working now at least but other bits are now playing up. New thread time, cheers for the help so far.

No its the battery light and the MFA now. Temp guage is more useful though.
