Won't run when warm
Very very odd.
Car starts on the button when it's cold, sits at idle fine and revs okay. it warm though and it all gets odd, leave it to idle and it'll eventually die and it's a munch to start again, generally won't start until it's cold again.
Thinking farked metering head/fuel filter?

temp sender or WUR? have you got an emissions tester? you'd be able to find if it's over/under fueling or over airing causing it.

Mine did the same when the ignition amplifier failed; when the car warmed up, everything went to pot and the engine wouldn't rev and eventually conked out. Left it to cool for 30 mins and it was fine. I guessed at the time it might be the internals breaking down as they got hot.

Re: Won't run when warm
Yes, I had similar trouble with a knackered ignition amplifier. I could start from cold fine every time (until the amp completely died) When driving, the car would suddenly start to stutter (a bit like you get when there's crud in the fuel lines) then cut out and refuse to start again until it had cooled down completely.wasted wrote:Mine did the same when the ignition amplifier failed; when the car warmed up, everything went to pot and the engine wouldn't rev and eventually conked out. It's an easy thing to check if you can borrow a known good one from somebody (a bit expensive to buy a replacement on the off chance).

Re: Won't run when warm
Remove a spark plug, if its all black and sooty its a fuel issue....failing that I have loads of amplifers, just pm me with the part number and I will have a look to see if i can help you
If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!
Re: Won't run when warm
Had a similar problem on my *£ GTI, if its injected check the fuel pump to see if hotter than normal when running.
Re: Won't run when warm
Would that be 83 GTI with the Shift button held down?rusty2 wrote:Had a similar problem on my *£ GTI

Re: Won't run when warm
Oddly the WUR and fisth injector fuel lines all have pressure unlike the Injector lines.

Okay,
This is getting a lot of attention on Facebook as well so the deal stands. Whoever can work it out gets a pint at the nationals.

Re: Won't run when warm
this is what my book says:
engine will not start when hot:
Faulty fuel pump
warm control pressure low
sensor plate rest position incorrect (unlikely)
sensorplate and/or control plunger sticking
vacuum system leak
fuel system leak
thermotime switch remains open
engine difficult to start (hot)
warm control pressure too high or too low
auxiliary air device not opening
falty start valve
sensorplate/control plunger faulty
fuel/vacuum leak
leaky injectorvalve's or low opening pressure
incorrect mixture adjustment.
check those out.
if you don't know what or how to check. just ask.
if i lived in the neighboorhood i would gladly take my toolshed/storage with me to check everything out.

I maintain it's the amplifier ;)
