If so don't be put off fixing them, it is easy and cheap.
Go to the breakers and find a PASSENGER seat from a Scirocco / Golf / Passat that has the same pattern as yours and get the foam and covers (or the whole passenger seat, depends on price & breakers yard policy ;) )
The right hand foam and cloth parts from the passenger seat (lower bolster and upper too if you need it) will unlikely be knackered and of course fit the drivers side outer bits that are knackered.
Taking the seat out is dead easy as I am sure you know.
Taking the plastic seat hinge covers requires a bit of cleverness as you need to push the 3 centre pins / pegs (obvious when you examine the covers) out from the inside of the mounting clips. A small long screwdriver is handy here. I have a dentists tool that has a long thin spike with a bend at the end that made getting at those pins / pegs from behind pretty easy.
Stripping the cloth off is dead easy too, (only take off the covers over the bits that need attention, no need to touch the rest) just twist off the little metal wire thingies, don't worry about damaging them, read on...
Replace the damaged foam with the good bits. I wrapped the thin metal bar at the top (the bit that wears through the foam) with some bandage to help prevent it happening again in the future.
Re-fit the cloth / vinyl covers.
The top tip here is to use those very small thin cable ties through the holes left by the metal wire retaining thingies. The "zip up to tight" action of the cable ties makes getting the covers on easy and neat.
The hardest bit I found was getting the seat back onto the cars runners with those plastic anti rattle clips back into place without them getting unseated or simply falling off !
Note = by the way, I also found out that there are 2 types of those plastic runner thingies and they are not interchangeable, the fatter one won't QUITE fit in if you have a car with the thinner ones (not sure what year change was involved !) I spent ages trying to get mine in until I compared the plastic bits I was trying to use (off the donor seat) to the ones of my seat
If I had not had the hassle with the wrong plastic runner thingies, I reckon I would have done the whole job in an hour :) (not including time at the breakers of course)
