Where can I find the paint code...

Post by marcus »

...for my Mk2 metallic bronze 1985 1.8 GTL? I've looked in the FAQ and on the web for the location of the label but am none the wiser...

It doesn't appear to be in the engine bay, in door openings or boot area.

If you have a sticker, it should be in the boot. If you have the original handbooks, there should also be a sticker inside the service record.

Thanks guys, the photo looks right, and I have the handbooks and inside the service schedule there is a sticker and it is LA8Y. Can anyone recommend a good place to get this paint in London?

Bit of bonus actually, 'cos I'd never looked at the service schedule and there are dealer stamps with mileages for the first ~13 years of its life!

It was owned by one person for all that time, and the second owner for five years was a neighbour, I've had it six years as its third owner, so now I can be pretty confident that the 102k miles on the clock are genuine, not bad for a 24 year old car.

N15 (South Tottenham, near Finsbury Park).

The car's lived in the same street for 11+ years now!

Forgot to ask earlier, does anyone know what the other values mean, on the sticker with the paint code?

The top line is the VIN, then:

Type: 534 452
Engine code/gearbox code: EX 4T
Paint no/interior equipment: LA8Y JT
Optional extras: A07 021 197 451 560
621 656 931

Are any of these the trim level?

I'm intrigued by the optional extras, 'cos for my money there aren't any obvious ones bar the foglamps, sunroof and the 5 speed (4+E) gearbox though I thought the latter was standard on the GTL - there was a Blaupunkt radio cassette, long-since removed.

I've bought paints from paints4u.com and they got a really good colour match in good quality spray cans. I'm sure you can get paint for using with a compressor too, if that's what you're after. Quick delivery too.
