Are driveshafts interchangeable with CV joints?

OK guys, bit of a hair-pulling evening. In the midst of fitting a replacement gearbox on Rocco and have run into a snag. The muppet that owned the car before me has changed one of the 100mm output flanges on the gearbox with a 90mm one. Now, I have 6 flanges altogether, so I can change these to whatever I want, but it means I have one driveshaft much heavier than the other. Now, I had assumed that the offside (drivers) was heavier because it was longer, but I don't know.

My question is, can 90mm inner CV joints be fitted to a 100mm driveshaft or vice versa? I suspect I'm just going to put it back to 1 of each, but I'm a purist and if I can replace it cheaply with 2 of the same size I will.

Thanks for the info guys.

Pretty sure we found they would fit. Just the external diameter that's different.

I remember reading that they are interchangeable, just a matter of removing a circlip and tack welding or machining the shaft a little. Check out the 16v conversion download on mk1golf.org forum, in the guide pdf its listed all the driveshaft options you can use together.

From what I remember it's the outer CV joints that are interchangeable - not the inner ones - at least not from 90mm>100mm. I'm not sure about the other way around as I don't believe anyone has ever tried such a thing

Yes they are interchangeable.
I got a gearbox with driveshafts from a mk2 golf to go in my car and have had to swap the CV Joints off the golf shafts onto the scirocco shafts.
It was a bit tricky but they do swap over.
