I've had a niggly problem with the rocco thats been getting worse the accelerator been sticking at the start, real problem in traffic!!!

so after speaking to Mark and Col at VWNW, they mentioned that it could just be the gromit in the pedal where the cable attachs, on top of that Col after getting a bargin lot handed one to me :)

Decided to do a belt and braces job and ordered a new accelerator cable, well it arrived today and with some time decided to fit it. Struggling to get the original one out i split the outer tube, but it didnt matter as I had a replacement :) anyway as mentioned the gromit was in deed well passed it, in fact the cable would have been rubbing causing he sticking.

new and old

Image

so job done went to attached the adjuster to the top of the rocker cover and thats when i noticed the washers were to small and just went through the brakcet :(

Image

so had to strip it out and with it being 5pm Eurocarparts wasnt open oh and its not open on sunday either which means the rocco is of the road till next weekend :( i only got the cable coz thay were offering 25% dicount on all parts, so just a warning to you all, will put an update once i've had chance to speak to ECP's

Okay update on the cable, went back to ECP's and was told thats the onoy one they had for my car (on inspection of thepacket its for a 1.6!!!!) he didnt even look on the computer to see if there was an alternative, so got my refund and headed over to GSF, 10mins later got the correct cable with the rubber type rocker cover mount, not only that got it at trade due to register membership and saved £6, ECP took £18 with the 25% discount, GSF £12 with the trade discount. bargin, will be fitting tonight :)

last night saw me fitting my new throttle cable, all done in just 10mins :)

Image

I then though (I know most times it ends up with me swearing and needing parts) since some of the interior was stripped out and I got a bargain in the form of MK3 Golfs stalks then I’d get these fitted.

Image

With my Haynes manual at the ready I started to remove the steering wheel, at that point all work nearly stopped, my socket set only goes up to 25mm, just alittle shy of whats needed to remove the retaining nut thankfully the imperial side came to the rescue. It was then a case of carfully unplugging and removing the original stalks.

(not to self, disconnect battery especially then using a screwdriver to ease out the block, sparks and electrical burning smell is not good, its also a bit of a shock, no pun intended, well maybe a little)

Fitting the MFA stalk went like a dream,

Image

the only modification needed was for the indicator stalk, the cowl at the top needed cutting back alittle.

Marked up-

Image

All done-

Image

All connected up I decided to check everything as although the MFA stalk was new, the indicator wasn’t. MFA working perfectly, the indicator one hmmmmmmmm no full beams and the highbeams resulted in the drivers front light not working, refitted the original and the same. Changed the bulb just in case and still not fixed, checked all the fuses and all were fine. With some head scratching I decided with it now being dark and gone 9pm I’d call it a night reattached the steering wheel (so I didn’t forget which wires went were for the horn when I realised that I hadn’t clipped over the catch to the MFA stalk mount for the full beam lights doh, connected it and still wasn’t working, so carried on refitting everything. Finally I saw what the problem was, the top rear connector block (the one for the full beams) had become disconnected (or I’d not fitted it tightly enough) this was noticed as the stalk bases wouldn’t sit flush. This connected and fully assembled tried the lights and all was working yeah :pilot:

So at 9:45pm I left the car with a sense of satisfaction, got some interior panels to refit tonight but the mod looks good and feels much better than the original ones. I also got to use the new manspace for what it was intended for.

Will get some better pics tonight

Okay got some better pics lasnight of the new stalks :)

Also decided to tackle anothe little job, the surround for the passenger electric window had one of its retaining clips broke which meant it was constantly falling out of the door, so as part of my £10 haul from VWNW i also picked up a few replacments, as it turns out one was damages in the same way as mine the long retaining clip to the bottom had snapped. Now this should have taken a few minutes and it would have if the people who fitted the "dealer aftermarket" electric windows had used a proper loom etc, at first it looked like there was a connector block for the wires in the back of the switch, on closer inspection the wires had been soldered in to the terminal :shocking: s-

Image

the problem the switch wouldnt pull back through the surround!!!!!!! some thinking later and test on the other damamged one I had I ended up having to cut back the inner edge of the surround to allow enough room to get the switch through, i then had to do the same to my nice new surround

Image

A few minutes after this all was refitted :)

I also has a lok at the glovebox lock (as usual it had dropped off), again got another new one in the haul from VWNW and set about fiting, unfortunatly neither the old one or the new one would hold in position, looks lke the glovebox door where the lock attaches is worn, dont really want to glue it on but tried widening the retaining clip with electrical tape but this wouldnt work, looks like "no-nails" may be used :)

Well with the little one delivered to her aunts I finally spent some time with the rocco

The job was a change to the front end after getting a £5 bargain of a mk2 Golf grill from VWNW in August.

How that car looked at the start-

Image

The donor grill-

Image

Okay started with the trimming down then ends-

Image

Then using my trusty multi-tool-

Image

The top and bottom were trimmed-

Image

Image

Test fit-

Image

Some trimming later it was finally fitted-

Image

Its not secured yet due to having issued with the bonnet release and spending an hour adjusting the bonnet position and bonnet holds, only fitted the bonnet a week or so ago and hadn’t realised there was a problem. Also need to trim my strut brace down alittle.

Next jobs, need to fit the boot liners and door card

Still considering trying to fit the eyebrow but this will take lots of pondering hmmmmm

Great thread, and VERY nice looking car now :good:

I hope you don't mind if I say I preferred the other "wide" grill though

This the sort of problem you're talking about? This is after the first (not very good) bodge, just before it was repaired properly.

Yeh but (thankfully) ours is not bad (yet) = just a smear of rust on the inside where the brackets are welded on the other side.

Won't be doing it myself though as welding is summat I just never learnt or tried !
