Not sure if its a 'glitch' or not, but I've noticed that when moving through the forums any attempt to go back from whence you came using the browser back button means you need to log back in.
Can anyone tell me if this is a glitch or a deliberate change to how the forum works?
You can still navigate backwards using the links that sit below the Register logo at the top of the page, but I guess most folks that use the internet regularly will be in the habit of using the browser's back button and the change only seems to have occurred recently.

No problem here using the browser "back" button. Doesn't log me out.
That has to be tempting fate.

maybe you should delete the forum cookies.
on the bottom of the forum there is a link to delete forum cookies.
i don't have problems with google Chrome, Internet Explorer or mozilla firefox.

Deleted the cookies my friend, but I still have the same problem and I'm using Internet Explorer too.
Like i say, if I try to move back to the last page viewed using Explorer's back button I can see the page, but I've been logged out. So I could continue to read posts etc, but if I want to post anything new I need to log back in.

Don't use them enough Sander to say. Even if I went into one now and had the same problem I wouldn't know if that was a recent thing or not. The thing here is that I'm on the Register everyday and so noticed it right away, but only over the last few days.
I know things are okay with Pete, but is there anyone else out there who has noticed this recent change or am I the only one remembering it's the browser back button I'm talking about and not the forum links.

i have that button on my mouse, and the use of it on top of the browser doesn't make a difference for me.
i've tried with the box "log me in each visit" unchecked and checked.
which IE do you use, and which system do you use ? windows?

Sander, I'm using Internet Explorer 9 and running windows, but that's what I've been using ever since I joined the Register.
Interestingly, I have Google Chrome installed too although I never use it. However, I just gave it a spin to see what it would do when I'm on the forum and the back button on it does what I'd expect it to do without logging me out.
So the problem seems to be linked to using Internet Explorer. Does that help point you in any direction?

My problems appear to have cleared now.
I cleared ALL cookies as advised, downloaded some updates and all is well for the present.
Hope it lasts.
Hope you get it sorted.

Okay, now I think we're getting somewhere. I couldn't understand Sander how it could have anything to do with my settings as I personally never change them and it’s only been in the last few days I've had this problem.
However, then I remembered a few days ago on the Google home page there was a link promoting the Google Art Project. Intrigued, I followed the link but was then told ...
You’re missing out…
Sorry, the Google Art Project uses technology that your browser doesn’t understand.
Install Chrome Frame for Internet Explorer to improve your experience of using the web. It’s simple and only needs to be done once.
So, guess what ... I installed their Chrome Frame not thinking it would affect anything else ... I mean it was
designed to improve my web experience after all. Anyway, I've now uninstalled Google Chrome and what do you know my back button is working like it used to ... even on the Register.
So, touch wood it would appear the problem is solved. My advice to anyone thinking of installing Chrome Frame is
don’t do it!

Guys, I'm afraid the problem of not being able to post photos has recurred. All attempts to post a hosted picture generates the following message:
It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image.
I remember this problem occurred a while back and I think Ant ended having to make some backroom changes after which everything settled down ... until today. I'm using my Flickr account and doing everything the way I did before, but it just refuses to accept the links/images. Image size is 900 pixels wide so well within the normal parameters.
Hope someone can sort this out soon because I'm itching to get some shots up from today's Ripon Spring Classic Car Show.
