Another early Mk2 you'd love to get your hands on, eh Russ? :-D

Many thanks, this is all good information. There is 2 stickers in the back quarter window. One that is circular that says Wolfsburg edition and another that says scirocco register and as you say the back badge is (scirocco gti) but the pillars have GT on them. My V5 has GTI on it also. Nice to know from you knowledgeable chaps it sound like a good one and any further information you can rustle up is hugely appreciated. Thanks again

Hi Scott,

Oh I say! You do indeed have an original unmolested (aside from the iffy paint job) 1983 GTi. I think you may have realised by now (!) what you have. I'd love to make you an offer right now for her but that's not fair considering what has been shared here.

PM me if you're still interested in selling.

Best

Russ

Hi.
That seems to have gone through ok. Unfortunately my skills with these modern telephones and computers are to be desired to be able to PM you 😅. Im not a member of social media either if that’s relevant to the PM thing. I would be interested in your thoughts on the current value and certainly a bid on the vehicle once you have some more photographs to be better informed. I am however fully trained in picture messages from my phone 😃.

Hi Scott,

I know what you mean, I regularly enlist help from a 'youth' myself! It's wonder I can do what I do for a living in this day and age...

Feel free to text or call me and we'll go from there;

Ahh carrier pigeon preferably please ha ha, great thank you. Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
The car is sitting in storage a mile up the town at the auto body place where I had asked for a cost on the paintwork. I’m popping in tomorrow to take some photos I’d appreciate your thoughts on. I’ve booked the car in for an MOT on Tuesday again as I’ve checked and it is out which I’d be doing regardless so fingers crossed 😂. Many thanks

OK Scott, no worries.

If you can get in touch by e-mail I'd be happy to come and give her a once over for you to see what needs to be addressed. No questions asked. No cost.

russell.b.robson@gmail.com

Please send me any photos Scott.

I completely understand if you don't wish to part with her, happy to instil what knowledge I have gained from the wonderful people on this forum to help you get to wherever you'd like to see her.

The main reason this forum exists is for like minded people to help each other out and to preserve these now very rare automotive icons!

Best

Have a butchers at this from this weeks Practical Classics mag... our cherished rides are quickly becoming extinct:

All the more reason to drive this website 110% to reach out to people who really don't know what they have rusting away on the driveway / lockups.

As an aside, my 1983 GL Auto (aka GLAdys) numbers are: Licensed = 4 SORN = 8... :-o
I haven't been on here for a while but spotted this discussion. I'm currently attempting to value my beautiful, early Mk2, partly for insurance purposes and partly due to the possibility that I may have to part with her in the near future, for the right price. In recent years I've had a couple of valuations by classic VW folks in the know, various offers of 'if you ever decide to sell her', and the offer of a swap for a Porsche but I'd like to see what a current, realistic price might be. Based on what was in this post' conversation, I thought I'd come to the experts.
She's a 1.6CL Early '83 in Alpine White
Single Wiper
Manual 5 speed
All original, Weber Carb fitted, in tip top condition with a few, negligable (?) signs of wear to paintwork and a couple of tiny dings, which I feel add to her character and life story, although I don't know how they came about as they were prior to my ownership.
I understand the single wiper variety is quite sought after/coveted and she is a true delight.
Tax and MOT Exempt and purrs like a dream.

I'm wondering what folks might think please.
I'm struggling to upload a photo.

I think it's impossible to put a value on it without seeing it in the flesh, or at least some high resolution photos. Even then, these early Mk2s are so rare, there is little data around to estimate a realistic selling price. Hardly any have been through auction in recent years.

For newer cars, valuation is a bit easier, as there are plenty of auction results online. The highest price attained for a Mk2 Scirocco at auction was a 1991 GT II sold for £15k during the post-pandemic peak of Summer 2021. This year, my 1992 GT II sold for £11k and a 1989 GT sold for £10k. But these were all with ultra low mileage of around 30,000. Also, these figures include the auctioneer's fees, which take a significant slice out of the sold price.

Other fairly recent but higher mileage cars in decent condition seem to typically sell for between £2k and £5k. A pretty comprehensive auction results listing is available here:

https://www.glenmarch.com/cars/results? ... ction=desc

For insurance purposes, you need to add on at least a couple of thousand pounds, to reflect the likely cost to buy car in similar condition at a dealer
