My belief now having had two opinions from a garage I trust is that this is simply just the noise that this belt makes with the combination of sprockets. Once hot it is creating a resonance that makes this ticking noise. I also think with the belt sitting on the outer edge of the sprockets (see top sprocket) there is more friction creating this noise. The garage both owner and son said that over many years of working on 8v Volkswagens there have been engines that simply can have noisy timing belts.

I am going to change the timing belt from Gates to a Continental one, got fresh bolts for the lower pulleys. I will of course check if there is any wear/rubbing in the lower inner cover. I might while I am at it consider changing the sprockets from another engine I have which never had this noise.

Hello Sandy and Gayle, appreciate the offer of your respective company.

Not got near to doing this yet but will be in touch imminently about doing something the turn of the month. I'm in the midst of doing seasonal farm stuff (bloody fencing :ire: ) but will be mostly done by the end of the month.

Can't see the belt being any different tbh but worth a swap and another check of the lower cover etc.

Hi Duncan, just in case it is of interest, it did have a new belt and tensioner a couple of thousand miles before you got it. Done at Central VW / Audi in Ellesmere port.
