Best idea is to buy a manual, study it for five minutes then get cracking.
Cam cover = 5 mins,
Alternator = 5 mins
Head gasket = 90 mins
Result = bluge in hip pocket OR something you don't want to part with. WIN WIN situation.
We can all give you advice, it's up to you what you do with it.
All I can say is GOOD LUCK when you start.

Gonna re-build it, just sent off all bits to be re-zinc'd and collected all new bolts. Should i go Original Parts or EuroCarParts ?? Euro Car Parts has 25% off at the min or Original VW is 4 times the price?

This will only be a weekend car at that... Original i understand would be best but for the price i dont think ill ever get my money back.

Pattern parts are ok but i use genuine on engine parts if poss. Coolant sensors, thermostats etc, all genuine.

I'm thinking radiator, gaskets, water pump, timing belt..

Don't dismiss buying from VW, some parts are cheaper than pattern parts, i.e Genuine VW oil filter £3 from the dealer and personally I wouldn't use any other make! Also Synta Silver oil is only £18 from the dealer. I would also ask the dealer if they will give you discount, I did and always get it now at the 2 dealers I use.

If you become a paid up member on here (£15 a year), you get a 10% discount at GSF all the time. I bought 2 radiators from them, the were about £42 each and I have no bother in over 2 years with either.

Sciroccos are pretty inexpensive to run and keep on the road so once it's all done you should get many years motoring out of it.

Well radiator was £109 and gasket set £110 granted I think water pump was cheaper!! Them prices are trade and without vat! Eurocarparts radiator £40 !! I'll get one from there !

yeah, a pattern rad makes sense. reason i said thermostat, coolant sensors etc,etc is because my scala had pattern parts fitted and it gave a rogue reading on the temp gauge, also the thermo time switch was a pattern part and that tells the ecu the engine temp i believe? anyway, i spent some cash and got gen parts and my gauge has been accurate ever since.
if you dont want to pay for gen(which i dont always)then try to get the best brand pattern parts you can afford.

Just because the radiator was expensive, don't give up on dealer's. I quite often get freebies from my dealer and I always get a discount.

Picked up some bits today off TPS Oldham, great price on oil and filter but the water pump they charged me a £40 surcharge and refundable if i bring my old water pump back.... Cheeky Gets....

Is the 10w 40 fine what they gave me ?

Hi,
Haynes manual recommends SAE 15W/50 or 20W/50.
Maybe someone else can tell you if 10W/40 is OK or not.
Glad you have decided to rebuild rather than strip.

I've tended to use 10w40 without any issues as far as I know, certainly my old 170k engine hadn't got any abnormal wear on the main bearings or bores because of it. 15W50 and 20W50 are pretty "thick" oils and won't flow as well certainly from cold as the 10W40 but will also not be as thick at 100 degrees C.

Sounds like a personal choice thing.
Which do you prefer - faster warm up protection or higher temp protection would appear to be the choice.
Suppose it depends if your on long or short journeys.
Why are these things never simple.

Glad to see you took my advice and headed to TPS!

The other posts are right about genuine parts - always use them if you can. Some things are expensive, and in some cases you can get the same part made by the OEM supplier (but without the VW logo on it) from places like GSF etc. that are cheaper.

However, in my experience, these places can be cagey when they are asked 'what make is that part?' Somethimes they are from spurious suppliers and are inferior quality to genuine parts.

You should use VW Quantum Blue 15w40 oil for your car - it's what the original manual recommends and can be had for about £13 for 5 litres from the dealer.

Best call your dealer first, mine doesn't stock it!
