Interior mirror is now bonded back on, headlights adjusted, done my final checks. Will give her a good clean out tonight and put the parcel shelf back in, MOT first thing tomorrow. Im pretty nervous, feels like exams all over again, wondering if you have worked hard enough to get the pass you need. Will report back tomorrow, hopefully with a certificate in hand

As above, good luck with the MOT, I'll be in the same situation soon and wondering what I've missed or not got right.

Well i took the car for its first spin since the rebuild down to the petrol station and then on to the MOT test centre. Was very wet out so i took it easy but it gave me the distinct impression this thing is going to be fast. Had a couple of issues on the way, o/s/f indicator wasnt working, after a bit of a fumble around with it it came back to life. Also realised i still had german style plates on so swapped these for the standard items. Now im just waiting for the call to give me the news....

Its a fail....Had a good chat with the guy and he was really impressed with the car on the whole but it does need some more attention. The exhaust is blowing at the front and in the centre. The osf wheel bearing needs replacing and the mcpherson strut needs tightening. The exhaust is a pain because i was hoping it could just get through the MOT so as i can drive to Bristol and get a stainless one custom made, now i have to waste more time sorting out something that is going to be on the car for just a matter of days. The wheel bearing isnt too bad as he said i can use his press. Unfortunately im off to a festival in leicester tomorrow so wont be working on the car for approx 10 days which sucks but thats the way it goes i guess. Still was lovely to take the car out it is so much more torquey feeling and the top end of each gear is going to be much more fun from now on

Would it be possible to Gun gum it or is it too far gone ??
I did this last year to get it through an MoT and it is still going ???
It is amazing what you can do with an empty bean tin, some wire and a tin of gun gum.
Better to only spend a fiver rather than splash the cash as it will only be temporary.
Pity about the ten days away because from memory that is the time limit before they charge a full re-test fee.
Good to know you have a press available as this makes life easier.
Enjoy your festival.

:bye:

PS I think you could drive the car to Bristol and back as long as you have proof that it is booked in / been booked in and returning to MoT station.
Some one more "in the know" may keep you clear on this point.

I have been looking into the various options over the last two days mulling it over, Basically the exhaust is going to need replacing to pass the MOT as the joins are terrible. I will be driving it to Bristol at some point to get a stainless section and tailpipe made up. I have today picked up new bolts for the mcpherson struts however these have centred heads whereas the ones on the car are slightly off centre. I will be getting it up in the air after work today and trying the bolts. As long as they are a good fit then it will be off with both the hubs in anticipation of bearings. Having spoken to Mr VW today it seems that G60 bearings arent the cheapest retailing at £52 each. I would check GSF but i cant seem to get on to the site. Anyway will post progress up later. Unfortunately due to the cost of stainless exhausts i am going to be selling my 2.5" rear lips for my BBS RM's. Not the end of the world though as i suspect a fair amount of arch work would have been needed.

I have been slacking big time recently, i realised this when my project fell off the first page which i dont think has happened throughout this build so decided i would pull my finger out and get the hubs off. I am nearly there but the track rods do not want to let go. Will be having another look tonight and then i can get the wheel bearings pressed in. Once that is done all that stands between me and a retest is a trip over to Bristol to see the exhaust people.

When is the Bristol meet? I have finally managed to get the hubs off using a tool that winds up exerting pressure on the track rods until they popped out. Bearings have been ordered so all being well they should be pressed in at the weekend and i can build the hubs back up. Dont have a camera at the moment so pictures will be a bit scarce for a while

Bearings arrived this morning and are being pressed in as i type this, will be picking them up tomorrow after work. This is good news because it means if i can get everything reassembled before the weekend i can potentially get the exhaust sorted this weekend meaning MOT retest next week. Fingers crossed that all goes to plan. Still gutted it wont be done for the national though. I really thought i would get there this year :ire:

So picked up the hubs yesterday with the new bearings pressed in. Ive taken the front hubs on and off so many times now that the rebuild is down to a fine art, managed to get the whole front end built back up and the camber adjusted correctly within an hour. So the car is back on the ground again and the only thing left to do now is to get the exhaust sealed up. Will hopefully make the journey tomorrow to get this sorted.
