Re: Project RED GTX
Ok, ive been running the car for just over a week and covered about 150 miles and its brilliant !!! I am really pleased with the car. A couple of teething problems have come to light in the last week, first off the heater matrix was leaking and theres the age old problem of a water leak in the boot. The water leak appears to be down to the drivers side rear light, so shouldnt be a big problem to rectify.
However, the heater matrix is a bit more involved, but this is no bad thing as it meant i could change the damaged upper centre console, replace the dodgy heater slider cable ( i mentioned earlier in the resto thread that the cable was kinked up and the slider was difficult to move) and change the bulb in the ashtray light at the same time. Here everythings stripped out.
The old matrix was leaking from one of the joints on the plastic end tanks, so it gets binned and replaced with a good second hand one and new hose clips. I topped the coolant up, started the engine and check for leaks and to make sure the heater gets hot, evrythings spot on.
Sods law dictated that i had the two shorter heater control cables, but not the long one that i needed. But a sudden flash of genius sees an old Scirocco bonnet pull cable cut to size and put to use as a heater control cable, its the same diameter and it works perfectly. The replacement upper console was fitted, everything put back together and the interior given a quick clean.

Re: Project RED GTX
A couple jobs ticked off the list today, first off was to fit a beesting aerial, purely because i like the look of them over the standard wing mounted ones.
I also changed the o/s front fog lamp, as the old one looked a bit tatty.
Hopefully having the drivers bolster repaired will be next on the list.

Be interested to see how much you get charged Mark ... unless you're tackling it yourself? If you are doing it on your own a few piccies would be nice.markh wrote:A couple jobs ticked off the list today ...

It was really good to see this car for myself on Sunday. It's flippin' gorgeous. Excellent work as always Mark. And the Sebring alloy wheels really suit it.

Re: Project RED GTX
I intended to strip down my drivers seat ready for the bolster to be repaired, but after working on the mk1 in the morning, the cold finally got the better of me. But i did get round to fitting a better battery after the car turned over really slowly this morning. I also fitted some Xenon headlight and inner spotlight bulbs and its made a huge difference to the standard p*ss poor lights. I know of lot of you go for the uprated headlight looms, but i couldnt be bothered with all that, when it only takes 5 minutes to fit better bulbs. It doesnt really show up all that well on the picture, but the drivers side with the new bulb in,is way brighter and its a white light rather than the yellow glow you get from standard bulbs. It cost a tenner for all four bulbs, plus two sidelight bulbs off Ebay.

Re: Project RED GTX
Just a very small update, due to having two slow punctures on the Sebrings and not being able to be arsed going to get them done, i thought id put her back to how VW intended with her original shoes. So from this.
To this.
Personally,i think i prefer the Sebrings, probably because they fill the arches better, but i have always liked the look of Castelettes on a mk2.

Huge thumbs up for the Le Castellets, one of the best wheels that was ever fitted to a VW. The car is looking good Mark, looking forward to seeing it in the flesh sometime this year.

Re: Project RED GTX
Cheers guys. I hav'nt been using the car all that much since buying the A4, but me and the wife went away for the weekend and seeing as we didnt have the kids with us, decided to take the GTX to stretch its legs, i'd almost forgotten how much i love this car !!!! Bit of a shock going from a 20valve turbo 1.8 to a 1.8i though, i thought the brakes were sticking at first !!!

Re: Project RED GTX
Well the old girl gets some long overdue love today. First off i swapped the noisy rad fan for the nice quiet one from the GT im breaking, then fitted a leather steering wheel.
I just had time to give it a quick wash, i want to give it a good clean inside and maybe a polish before the Midlands meet on sunday.
Im on holiday from work next week, so i want to see if i can get the drivers side bolster cover repaired at the local upholsterers.

Re: Project RED GTX
A spare afternoon today sees the GTX get a nice, aftermarket, electric window upgrade ( courtesy of jimmyconways broken Scala) Its an easy kit to fit, as it uses the original manual window regulators.
I had to make the holes bigger in the door cards, where the original winder handles fitted, to fit the blanking plates.
I didnt really have many options for fitting the switches, i was tempted to fit them in the door cards, but settled for the lower centre console purely because if i messed it up i had a spare to use.
Also, fitting the switches here did allow me to do away with a previously badly fitted alarm LED, so its not all bad. Im very pleased with the end result, the motors were a bit noisy, so i wrapped them in polystyrene foam to silence them a bit and also to protect them from any water that may get on them.
Now the car just needs a good clean inside.
Weather and kids permitting ( damn school holidays !!!!) i intend to get a couple more jobs done tomorrow.
