So all my stuff came back from the powdercoaters so i made an early start today albeit with a hangover to get started on fitting it all. The hangover soon disappeared when i saw it begin to take shape.
Firstly i fitted the bracket i had fabricated for the ECU. As i wanted the bracket to hold away from the bulkhead so water couldnt get stuck and so the two metals didnt rub against eachother i came up with a strange solution of using silicone hose to act as a spacer between the bulkhead and the bracket.

This fits nicely and will keep the ECU off the base of the scuttle and under the scuttle cover.
Next up was the headlights. First of all a MASSIVE thanks to Colin (DT1) for helping me out with sourcing the parts
Fixed the orange indies (Thanks Mark H) and offered the brackets up then lights in and covers on. The covers were originally chrome but this didnt suit the look of the car and the chrome was a bit flaky too so went for satin black on all the headlight parts.
First side on

Then added the front grille

Started on the second side after that but ran out of the correct screws so i'm one light short Will get some screws next week and finish this off

Felt great to see her new face start to come together, i do have an eyebrow spoiler too but im going to see how the finished look is before i commit to getting it painted and fitted.

looking great - watch out re the eye brow spoiler, it doesn't fit properly with the '82 gti' front lights, they sit differently to the more common set up - infact the box the kamei ones come indicate it's a no no.

Did the E30 lights fit easily or was it quite intricate?

Love how the front's looking ... mighty tempted to get a set of those myself.

They're GTi / American specification headlights :)

funky diver earlier in the thread it had e30 lamps, yes i too though huh but those are... and went searching the thread

hmmm... so does this mean therefore that the E30's will fit GTi frames and thus solving the "my lights are knackered" dilema?

I dont believe so - When i had the E30 lights in i had custom brackets. It wasnt the tidiest of fits when looking up close.

It wasnt easy by any means, took a lot of patience to get them sitting correctly in the grille. The adjustment wasnt too great on them either. Looking back at it i should have made new frames up for them before fitting but was in too much of a rush to get them in there!

Glad i didnt send this off to the painters then!! thanks for the advice, i'll check the link that Colin posted and see if there is a way around it. First off though i'll see how it looks with the bonnet on and go from there.

I've brought one of the headlamp screws with me today so will hopefully be in stock at my local metalwork place. I can then get the other headlamp into place tonight so i can see what the final look will be like, might even treat myself and put the bonnet back on

Another lovely evening to work on the car tonight. Picked up some screws for the final headlamp tonight but just before fitting it realised that the previous owner had bodged the light as it was missing its rear cover.

Obviously this would lead to water ingress and condensation so it had to be sealed. Luckily i had the boot from the standard light so i needed something the same diameter to attach it to. After searching high and low i found that the lid of a cadburys hot chocolate bottle was a good fit ao i cut out the centre of the lid and tested it for size.

It fitted well so i then got the glue gun and attached it to the light placing the boot over the top

I then taped the whole lot together with insulation tape. I realise this isnt the most professional of solutions but it will be out of sight and as with a lot of the rest of this build sometimes solutions like this are okay...!!
After that i fitted the light and the front end is almost done (I have a nice touch arriving in the week hopefully)

Thanks for the kind words Alex, she is definitely starting to take shape now but there is a lot more work to come. Havent even made a start on the bodywork, but getting her together and MOT'd is the immediate concern

Just keep an eye on it to make sure it's not getting too hot - or the glue will disappear! (I speak from experience with glue-guns and lights)

The car's shaping up very nicely indeed. Definitely looking forward to it being finished

I will indeed Ed, hopefully it should be okay as a temporary measure until i can source something a tad more suitable for the job!
