Rear seat backrest - single piece or split?

Post by wasted »

I'm hoping someone can clear this up for me...

When I bought my Scala, the previous owner had fitted a leather Storm interior, complete with split rear seats. There's a plate that's supporting the split with a ratchet affair that appears to have been riveted into the floor. It's pretty unstable, and I'm wondering whether it's original - did the late Scalas come with split rear seats or single piece backrests?

storm and most (if not all) uk spec gtx had the split folding seat.

split rear seat was a scala option when the gtx was replaced by the injection engine scalas for the 89 model year.

the rear seat backs should bolt to the hinges - potential MOT fail I 'understand' if the seat is not secured.

so, if your car has the mounting plate on the floor of the car it should just be a question of screwing/bolting the rear seat backs into place.

if there is no mounting plate then the MOT people 'could' have an issue - if they ever tried to fold the seat down and check how secure it is.

Well in fact the assembly that supports the seat is riveted directly into the thin metal floor, so no strengthening plate or anything. I don't think it's original, and it flexes like hell; the rivets actually tap against the surface of the fuel tank. I think I'll be looking at either removing the seats entirely or replacing with a single-piece backrest set.

they're not allowed to fold the rear seat down during the test. or unfold it for that matter. all they'd be allowed to do is give it a shake, and they are unlikely to even look at it, unless they lean on it and it moves

actual failure reasons are:

1.The security of the driver’s or any passenger’s seat is significantly reduced.

2.A seat back that cannot be secured in the upright position.

Mine passed 2 MOTs that i know of with no central bracket at all.i made a bracket that bolted on where the seatbelts bolt in the middle to hold it eventually.maybe not the greatest design but it held until i changed the seats
