Bit of a worrying one, this. Recently I've been feeling clunking/clicking through the pedals when steering at slow road speed (i.e. when the steering gear is under load). It seems likely to me that this may be the universal joints at the base of the steering column.
I've looked at where the UJ exits the car, and it looks a right bastard to get to, since the rubber boot on the steering rack will need to come off. It's very cramped in that general area. Has anyone successfully done this before? Am I looking at taking the steering rack off in order to get more access? If so, what's involved?

get it checked by a garage you trust.
racks are not the easiest of things to check out and there are too many people out there that'll have you replacing everything.
could be the joint at the bottom of the steering column but thats rare.
either way, better to pay for a check than it lock up on you.
racks aren't dear and quite easy to fit but time consuming. you can buy them complete with new track rod ends included now for around £70 to £80.

Just a thought, this might be a outer CV joint going by experience. Something that can be bought and replaced at home with a bit of know how.

I may not have made myself very clear here... The noise actually only happens when I'm turning the steering wheel. Once I have steered, and the car's turning, there's no noise, so I don't imagine this will be a CV joint; it's more likely something to do with the steering rack or column.
