engine oil light
Right. I personally and my mate (a mechanic thats knows vw engines inside out) think this is an wiring issue. But before we atempt to trace every wire back to the fuse box.earths and speedo. Id thaught id ask in here if anyone has had the same problem as im having. So here we go....
My engine oil light occasionally comes on and starts to buzz at me its extremely annoying when you have no radio to drown it out. If you blip the throttle it turns off but comes back on in a minuite or so. Or if you go down hill it turns off. Or if im on the road woth no one infront of me its fine but as soon as i get stuck behind a road captain at 50mph it starts buzzing at me again.
So ive changed the oil to 10w40 mineral. Put a new filter on it. Changed the high and low oil preasure sensors and it still comes on.
The engine is a EX 1.8 8v carb. (webber) the car from start is fine apart from it does take about 5-10secs for the oil light to shut off and the whurring of what i guess is the oil pump to quieten down. Its also rather tappety.
The car is a mk2 rocco gt11 and its done 177k miles. I have been thinking of just replacing the engine but would rather get this problem sorted as its cheeper on my tight wage.
If you got this far thank you for reading my scribble. And please help :(

Re: engine oil light
Sounds suspiciously like the oil pump might be on the way out if it stops when the engine is turning faster and it's slow to stop when you start it.

Or the oilways are badly clogged up.

Re: engine oil light
Ive given it 2 lots of oil flushes so it should be all clean. Then again the oil pump isent exactly going to break the bank
Re: engine oil light
Ok so not the oilways then...
Slightly odd it stops when driving downhill, since the intake pipe is at the back... is the sump damaged in any way?

Re: engine oil light
Or could there be something in the sump that shouldn't be there, that may be partially blocking the intake pipe but moves when going downhill? A rag or something?

Re: engine oil light
Nah the sump is fine its a lil oily from ovever the years its strange. Im going to replace the oil pump either way. If that doesent cure it then im at a complete loss. Unless its the crankshaft bearings completly worn out causing it.

Re: engine oil light
Change the oil pump, had the same problem with my Golf.
The buzzer is there to let you know you have low oil pressure, not good for the engine, if you keep driving the car with the buzzer and light flashing you will need to put in a new engine.
Be careful when putting the sump back on, the bolts near the gearbox can be a pain to get to and easy to cross thread.

Re: engine oil light
Test the oil pressure with an oil pressure gauge first. Also the two senders.
You may just have a faulty warning buzzer unit in the instrument console.

Re: engine oil light
its defiantly the oil pump its whining like a beech for like 2 mins on cold starts. so tomorrow im going down my mates garage and remove the sump clean the oil strainer, and see what part number the pump is, apparently theres 2 types of oil pump's. really starting to pee me off just wish i had the money to get a vr6.
Re: engine oil light
How hard is it to replace the oil pump? Today im only going to be dropping the sump nd cleaning the strainer i might even remove the pump and see if i can clean it out and see whats broken on it. But i cant get a pump now for a few days. Which sucks coz it is on its last legs litterally. Also is the sump on a gasket or silicone?

Re: engine oil light
once you have the sump off its dead easy to remove the oil pump - held in with two 12mm (i think) bolts just level with the underneath of the dizzy - put the new one in its place and you should be good to go! unless its just a faulty buzzer in the dash clocks as was mentioned above...then you'd still have the annoying buzzing, but the reassurance of proper oil pressure to go with it!
EDIT!!
the sump is on a gasket but you could silicone it up if you really wanted to..

do I really want a carb'd valver? answers on a postcard...
Re: engine oil light
As big nick says, it's a gasket - details in Haynes chapter 1, section 17, pages 36-38 which advises not to use any sealant when fitting the new gasket.

It would seem i need to invest in a haynes bible at some point. Would certainly help me now im married to the ways of the old school vw's
Re: engine oil light
Oil is out sump is removed. To find the strainer blocked with bits of plastic and quite a few bits of plastic shards sitting in the sump.
RESULT!! just ota clean the strainer out and refit and re-fill
