hi guys,
so i recently stripped down my doner rocco and have a spare EX engine kicking about. i was thinking about stripping it down and doing a complete rebuild. but i am not too sure how much this will cost me, does anyone have any rough estimates?? its not that i need a new engine it would just be a fun project to keep me busy, so i could take my time on it and do it properly! i have never done an engine rebuild so any advice would also be greatly appreciated!
cheers

Re: engine rebuild advice
ile be honest with you, you could strip it down and find nothing wrong with it so it will only cost you the price of gaskets and stress bolts ( must get the head tested and skimmed if it need it).
just do it.
if its knackered theres plenty of generic spares for sale.
one thing i will say tho is make sure if you can afford it try and use genuine parts. because that will be why it has lasted as long as it has in the first place.
buy nice or buy twice!

Re: engine rebuild advice
i would budget around 200 quid.
1- head gasket kit with new bolts around 45 quidish
2- timing belt kit around 35quid ( make sure you have the kit including idler pulley not just a belt)
3- head skimmed and tested for leaks i paid 50 quid couple of years ago
4- bearings varys on levels of quality but not expensive from gsf or volksbits or even euro car spares.
5- new oil pump (not a must but prob a good idea if a high mileage engine) nate was selling one for a tenner i believe, get in quick and nab a bargain.
6- water pump 30 quid
7- fastnings and bits and pieces that will break or round off while your stripping it.

Re: engine rebuild advice
Depends on wear n tear and how far you want to take it. If you want it reliable then you need
to do it properly and take into account all possible wear.
I'd replace bearings with kobelschmidt items.
Pobably go for the barrels honing and new rings(kobelschmidt).
New valve guides and check valve stems for wear.
Reseat or recut valve seats.
Have crank bearings polished.(pointless having new bearings on marked journals)
New oil pump and water pump.
Skim head and crack/pressure test.
head gasket set and sump set.
acid dip engine and paint if you want it to look the part.
Mine needed new coolant flanges and that added best part of £50.
New thermostat and coolant/oil temp senders?
anti freeze/oil .
Budget for £350-£400 if you want it to last..at least.

And whilst it's in bits don't forget to clean out the small water ways that feed coolant around the inlet manifold. These often get blocked (sometimes when the "O" ring breaks up) and cause the carbs waxstat to malfunction. A common cause of folks ditching the Pierberg for a Webber
