E30 head lights

Post by 79 Scirocco »

I put BMW E30 lights on my Scirocco a while back. They work very well, I have new (USA Spec) lights but I am afraid they are crap. Pointing the wrong way for start. Any way the light fit relative easy. I had to cut the lamp holders and trim down the E30 lights. I fitted two relays to drive them and left the parking lights on the original loom. The lights are a huge improvement on std items (which are hard to find). Just some info for someone who might be interested in doing the same.

From the back. You can just see the relays. I used the BMW loom for the lights so they plug in and look tidy. :good:

If it's got tits or tyres it's trouble but I always go back for more.

The relays take a lot of load off the headlight switch.
As standard the power runs through the switch to the lights. With the relay the switch just turns the relay on and that then powers the lights.

I'm sure there is a guide on here somewhere. I had looked into doing it a while ago.

Definitely worth relaying! I've had a couple of headlamp switches melt on old VWs, and it's really not fun!

does anyone have a wiring guide?

cant seem to find one anywhere, only the guide which details the modification of the headlight brackets.

They should fit as the capri used the same headlight, my Mk1 uses H1 bulbs so let us know you get on with fitted the wiring and H4 bulbs.

Glad you found these I might get some, also this might stop some people asking large amounts of money for 2nd hand Mk1 headlights on ebay :ire: as you can how get 2 new ones for a good price.

They are nice quality glass branded Autopal and come with the sidelight already wired in. The plastic is tough and the rubber boot is nicely made too. You can get the standard ribbed ones, I went for the crystal cos its cool :vcool:

just gotta track down that how to now...

Had a go with the new units and they will fit with a little fettling. The chrome ring is a little baggy but with a spacer it will work, unless you don't mind the lens face poking out more than the standard lamps. The retaining ring will need to be drilled to take the sidelight fitting and the edge will be cut to let the whole thing sit nicely within the retainer. I'll have them powder coated after.
