How long is a piece of string springs to mind! It all depends where you go and where you are in the country.
You could ask on here, there are plenty of people that would assist at a fraction of the cost, and you could learn a few things to boot.
Where are you based?

I am in Loughborough and think that the head gasket has gone so I am getting a couple of prices on that, my car is only the 1.6 8v and was thinking of simply changing to the 1.8 8v, I have seen a couple of engines.

Re: Engine change?????????
Does it run on injection or carburettor?
If youre going to go from carb to inj. its lots of work uprating the fuel delivery.
But if its carb to carb or inj to inj, straight swap.
I'm not 100% sure but you may even be able to use a 2.0 block if youre running inj.

Swapping a 1.8 carb (EX) engine for the 1.6 carb engine (don't know the code) that's there should not be a problem. A competent garage could easily do it in a day.
