Bought me a MK2 Storm, What next?

Post by Delraj »

Hi Guys,

i just bought myself a MK2 Storm in Havanna Brown (84) i believe, paid £600 and its in need of a repair and restore, after doing some research i found some really good advice on looking for rust etc... but what should be my plan of action to get this car restored if possible. A full car rebuild ?

i am novice at this so any procedure & tips?

i will post pics when i take them

Thanks

I always believed in getting the mechanics right first them the cosmetics unless there is a major structural problem with the car.
Not much point in having a nice shiney car sitting on the drive if it WON'T drive ???????
I see like most new members, myself included, that you haven't put your location down, if you do this there may be a member down the street from you that could call in and advise you.
You don't need your address just city, town or village will do.
Good luck with your adventure.
I'm sure someone with a
MK2 Storm in Havanna Brown
will be in touch with you very soon.

Put an advert on here in the relevent section for the lock set.
There was only ever 600 MK2 Storms made in the world, all for the UK market, so I for one think thry are worth saving.
I could give you an idea of costs/work that I have undertaken to get my Storm up to a good standard, pm me if you are interested.

My advice would be take it for an MOT and see what it fails on - you may be surprised at how little (or how much) needs doing.

And as mentioned above - it's always better to have a project you can enjoy driving.

A good idea would be to check out the Projects and Restoration section here - that will give you an idea of what you're in for.

Hi Delraj
If you are looking to restore it & sell on then I wouldn't throw loads of cash at it as you'd be lucky to recoup what you've spent after it is finished. Personally I would restore it and keep it as a classic. Prices appear to be on the up but It 'll mean more to you than the cash and it is becoming a rare vehicle.
There are very few decent Storms around & to save one and enjoy it is the best thing to do.

Alegdly it starts first time and had an engine rebuild before it got sold to my freind and sat on his drive for past 4 years in the great British weather, check the boot at it was extremly damp and signs of rust on wheel arches behind and around body kit. No keys for car so locks need changing, any ideas?, check the body and chasis for rust but then?

Looks good from the pictures, its worth checking the fuel filler neck for rust, look inside with a torch and check underneath and feel around the hose there will be mud and alsorts stuck up there. Then fit a new fuel filter, you don't want dirt and water getting in the the fuel system it can create alot of problems.

Keep us updated on how its going.

Bought currently
  • VW Scirocco Haynes Manual = £17
  • VW Scirocco Bentley Manual download = £ Free
need to replace Ignition barel and keys then rekey all my locks which sounds like cheaper option rather than repacing all locks etc..

Found a ignition + Keys on ebay for £6.50

does this sound alright?

Check in the cars breaking section and see if you can pick up a full set of locks and key.
