Electric window regulator sticking

Post by MacColl »

I resorted to pulling out one of the motors and regulator from my GT2 that someone has fitted post factory. Since I've had the car the windows reach near the bottom of their closing range and stop before the bottom. The motors continue turning when pressing button up or down but kind of click and stick until you force them back up.

I thought it was the runners needing some lubrication and equipped myself with silicon spray and went to fit better looking runners from my old Rocco. What I realise now is that it is actually the regulators getting stuck at their lowest point and this is on both sides. The motors are bosch and must have been for another VW like a Corrado.

See arrow shows the regulator upside down but sticks in that low position (excuse the products in shot)..

So is there some sort of teeth wear, allignment or sheering of a cog going on here? Or are these not really suitable for the Rocco maybe not long enough regulators? Once above the low point they do go up and down albeit with maybe needing some cleaning and new lubrication.
I suspect they have never really worked properly and I have already fitted a manual regulator. I am tempted just to go manual to save all this hassle :ire:

Me and Colin have had a very frustrating few hours changing the passenger side motor on my Storm, to find out the hard way the cog that coils the cables (yes cables) was seized and not moving when the motor was switched on. I know need the whole mechanism!

I know this doesn't help you mate, but I wish I had the option of a manual winder!

The manual winders are now fitted on both doors :yup:

I see you've had a nightmare with this at Harewood and feel both of your pain, it's like trying to work with your hand down a sharp edged can with the added joy of dirt and grease :ire: I've been fighting on and off with this all weekend

I didn't have time to look at the regulator and the cog you mention but will eventually. I think for now I'll just run with manuals as I have the standard door cards there anyway that I was going to modify for the switches, I'll just seal and tuck them away for now.

I'm sure you'll get a whole mechanism from the likes of Club GTI or the usual places. Don't know how compatible these are with other MK's :dunno: to get one from a scrapper?

I'm told that these regulators are likely poor quality after market ones and are not a great design.

I wonder then Ian what do the regulators on the Storm look like? More like manual ones with a motor like here?..

Would Mk2/Mk3 Golf ones fit?

Great stuff, thanks I'll just go with manuals and keep the wiring/switches tucked away as an option for electric until I track down suitable mechs.

Would the motors on mine which are Bosch be any use to you? I don't know If they are worth keeping as an option for me as spares for better regulators?

Thanks mate for the offer but it isn't the actual motor, I have 2 now that work! It is the gear mechanism.

I've got the same ones in my Scala, fitted them about 17/18 years ago and they are still going strong, also had the same ones in my GTI and never had any problems with them, they are an aftermarket kit but i'm sure i got mine from a VW dealer, and they come with VW switches (same switches as in a Corrado and i think later Scirocco's)
