Hummm, gearbox codes, I thought it was just an 020 box, but I read there are differences.

Our car is still in the garage a few miles away so I don't know what code my box is until Monday

Like there is a "9A" box on here for sale...

@ bensspares, what code is on the box you have for sale ? (if it matters that is ?)

Also, Question = I assume my 85 GTS will have the smaller (90mm ?) drive shafts, is it easy to swap the flanges over if I end up with a later (100mm ?) type box ?

Edit = I found this http://www.brokevw.com/020flange.html on swapping the flanges over = not a 2 minute job and it seems you need a special tool !

Edit = Another resource containing info re the differences between the various codes, including flange sizes and ratios = http://www.brokevw.com/020ratios.html

Hi,

Its a 9a, its the sports box, the 1 you have already fitted will be the same as the gt, the difference will be that the gtx box will give better acceleration but you will loose a few mpg...the drive shaft flanges are an easy swop..i did them by laying a peice of wood on the fange and pushed down with my knee and flipped out the circlip and off it came, refitting is the same as removal except you refit the circlip, should take more thatn 20 mins or so to swop both.
If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!

OK, so the garage has been on the phone to say that they are pretty sure it IS a diff issue BUT it needs an inner CV joint anyway. So, I might as well get them to do that whilst it is there, then see if I defo need a replacement box.

Garage is ringing back to tell me if 90mm or 100 is fitted (86 GTS btw, but might have been upgraded ?)

Question = They say they can only find recon joints and they either would prefer to fit new, or at least get a recommendation as to who does the best recon ones (this does, for me, inspire confidence in this"new to me" garages integrity). So, can anyone recommend decent ones to get ? GSF, EuroParts, Heritage VW, etc ?

Just been looking around at GSF and Eurocarparts, their webisites don't not indicate which of their range of 6 inner CV's is 90mm / 100mm or whether recon or not :( ( I see mention of 94mm and even 81mm on vwheritage ?????? )

And £8.95 on ebay = here

Oh dear, how can getting a CV joint get this complicated !!

EDIT = found GSF ones on ebay Here but it lists fitting from 1982 to 1992 WITHOUT saying if 90mm or 100mm

Found one useful way to tell = the 100mm ones are handed = LH & RH so if the listing does NOT say which side it is for it must be the smaller type.

So assuming ours is the smaller type, I am guessing this is the one = http://www.gsfcarparts.com/439vg0430 (it's listed as "Premium" quality, there is a cheaper one but I won't skimp here ;) )

Just an update = after changing the CV joint the knocking noise seems to have gone :good: I was a bit surprised because it didn't sound like your usual CV joint noise. Anyway, not counting chicken just yet as only done a few miles and it was a bit intermittent, but thinking it is fixed :good:
