rear side window removal

Post by james butler »

just changed the rear windows on the rocko mk2 for green tinted ones. very easy thing to do.
so i thought ide do a little how to.
1st thing is to pull the seal in away from the body of the car to help break the seal inside.
2nd push from the inside either by pressing with your hand or lie on the back seat and push with your feet with someone outside to catch it, (easiest stating at the top).
3rd lift out the window from frame.
when installing the new window lube up the seal LOADS with washing up liquid, this helps ease the window back in.
4th put a piece of rope in the seal lip all the way round.
5th place the rope ends inside the car and press the window lightly into the frame while a helper puls the rope from the inside pulling the seal over the window frame lip.
6th keep pressing the window into the frame untill all the seal is pulled over the window frame lip then push it firmly into place while kneading the seal into place from the inside.

things to be carefull of!!
when pulling the rope internally pull away from the window frame lip or you can end up pulling your roof liner and b pillar vinyl out of place, i did this and it looks cack if it happens  ended up taking the window back out to fix it.
dont use oil based lubes as it has been said before it can damage the rubber seals
be carefull how hard you pull the rope around the corners of the window frame to get the seal in, they take a bit of force to get in but they also rip easily, patience is key.
oh yeah and to state the obvious only take the window out on a dry day.

time wise
it took less than a minute to pop the glass out.
takes about 25 min (for me and the missis) to get the new one in.

Washing up liquid is also not so good on rubber so I'm told. How about pure soap (is this what tyre fitters use?

Washing up liquid contains huge amounts of salt which is not good for the "rubber" (or metal of course).

I went to pick up a replacement side window a few years ago from near Warrington after some goon smashed ours. We nearly had the one out of the donor car when it broke   = one unhappy bunny :( I was amazed at how easily it broke as we were not being rough with it. Take care ;)

Found one in a breakers next day and was a LOT more careful removing it !

using the right sort of rope is a massive timesaver too. any old string will work, but you can get stuff designed for the job. feels like it's probably got a wax or similar impregnated in it, so it can slide easier on the rubber. feels 'orrible!
