How are these day to day? starting and heating etc?
I'm looking at a mk1 1.6 gti (golf) as a daily, with good service history with a recent service and just trying to decide if it worth selling my leon to go retro again...

Re: 1.6 gti as a daily?
It will depend entirely on what sort of condition it's in and how well it's been looked-after. A car that's regularly used and serviced on schedule, with faults fixed as they arise will be easy to use whether it's 10 or 30 years old. If it's been neglected or under-used, then you should expect trouble for a long time until everything is sorted again.
A 30-year old car won't be as refined or relaxing to use as a modern one, though.

I drives a mk1 1.6 gti (scirocco) as a daily and its great. Gets a bit warm in the summer in traffic (even with a sunroof) but not a huge issue really. They cope well in the snow! Reliable too. And the main thing, puts a huge grin on my face every single time!

Re: 1.6 gti as a daily?
Back in the 80's I had several MK1 Golf GTi's as my main and only car, they were great and no issues but then I did learn to drive in a Vauxhall Chevette! I used to drive from and to Germany on the high speed autobahns.
As stated you forgo any modern gadgets such as air-con, electric windows, power steering but there again that means less to go wrong! Engine wise they are pretty unbreakable just have to make sure the body work is not invaded with rust and parts are reasonably easy to get hold of and pretty cheap.

Aside from a short stint of 4 months in a Santana and a year in an '85 Audi coupe, I have been driving for thirteen years and always driven A1 chassis cars. Perfectly useable for the daily routine providing you look after them. Her indoors does 15,000 miles per year in a GT2 with no issues.

Cheers for the replies. Sadly I had to turn this car down, I need to finish the rocco first. Gutted cos its exaclty what i'd like in a mk1 golf. Ah well I just gotta hope one turns up in the future, and I'm able to take it on - tell me i'm not hoping too high!
