Steering rack bushes

Are they difficult to replace? Will it involve dismantling a lot of the car or just the rack?

I want to change the ones on the 82 GTI as the steering's a bit vague compared to what I'd expect.

Would poly bushes be a good idea here?

If it's the same as Mk1 Golf it should be just a matter of taking the clamps off and you'll find the bushes have a split at the back that allows them to easily enough come out. As for for Poly's I would imagine not that much of a difference unless you were going racing.

For road use I would go for good quality OEM ones from the likes of http://www.vwspares.co.uk/scirocco_steering.php or VW Heritage etc. Dealers I'm not sure?

As said above a simple case of taking the bracket off to replace the bushes, personally i went polybush as i was replacing all the other bushes at the time.

Thanks - looks fairly easy. I imagine access will be the biggest problem with the engine in the way.

I thought poly bushes would probably last longer and might sharpen up the steering a bit, but aren't going to alter ride quality in the way poly suspension bushes will.
