sounds normal to me. take it for a drive see if it quietens down.
mine takes at least a minute or 2 from cold to stop tapping.
funnily enough the time it takes to quieten down lengthens the closer i get to each service, then with fresh oil goes back to normal.

cool, good to know. not very experienced with these engines yet, always a learning process!

just got word from my mate who is driving (was driving) it to his place in reading, and its died. he thinks it was over heating, had no power low down, and now wont start :(

might all be over before its begun...

that sounds suspicously like oil pump failure. did you get oil light come on with a buzzer?
new engines are quite cheap and plentyfull so not a big problem to change engine if its seized.

1st thing to do is put a wanted add in the wanted section or look in the parts for sale section and subsection cars breaking, there you will find lots of spares including engines. its just a matter of finding one closest to you and for the right price. prob around 100-150 quid mark?

Hi pal, sorry to hear about the (sounding like a) failed engine! I'm selling a 1.8 carb engine if you need one and you're interested. Although I'm located in Manchester. Selling the carb too so could come to an arrangement if you needed that aswell. Engine has a new coil, leads and distributor (all prob done 500 miles, if that). drop me a PM if you need any help.

Cheers,

Andy
