distributor problems

not sure if this is in the right section but its electrical related.
my rocko died on me thursday, it just stopped dead.
got it towed home and found i had no spark. so first things first i stuck a plug in the king lead from the coil and there was no spark, this rulled out ht leads, dizzy cap + rotor. so following the haynes manual i checked the tci-h thing under the scuttle panel. this checked out ok according to mr haynes so then went on to check the hall sender switch in the dizzy. again according to mr haynes, when a voltmeter is attached to pin 3 and 6 on the tci-h plug, i turn the engine over by hand i should see voltage rise and fall, this didnt happen. i was getting a constant 4 volt. so i pulled the dizzy and found the chip on the hall sender had a chunk missing on the inside
lucky enough i have a spare but its for a gti rocko.
ive put the dizzy on and the car runs great, it goes like the clappers and runs much smoother but my question to you guys is will i damage anything running this dizzy on my carbd engine for now?
as i am planning to change the cam soon anyway with one from a dx engine.

just to add to this, what do i need to set the dizzy to in degrees.
i know it has been said before, if you change the cam in a carb rocko with a dx cam you have to advance the timing or something, but if you change the dizzy aswell with the dx cam, the timing remains the same?
because i have changed the dizzy and not the cam will i need to retard it from stock settings?

the only thing that would be different between the 2 dizzys would be the way they advance/retard the timing to give a different power/torque curve. can't see it doing any damage at all, so long as if physically fits. as for setting the timing, just keep advancing it little by little until it pinks under load, then back it off a bit. you'll get it running much much better than if you set it by the book
