My second car was a MK1, a gold GLi, this was back in early 1985 and it was a 7 year old car. I was living in Germany at the time and two of my mates in my troop had MK1 GLi's as well. It was a decent car and since then I have had 40 cars in total, all VAG, 9 of them Sciroccos (3 MK1 and 6 MK2).
Totally disagree about the MK2 tarnishing the MK1, it was an evolution for the day and went a long way to improve on the dreadful rusting of the MK1 and a lot of cars from the 70's.

I agrere I can't say im a massive fan of the Mk2 Scirocco and IMO it does some what give the Mk1's a bad rep
I think prices will only be going up and up. I find it strange they don't fetch the same kind of money that 70's Mk1 Golfs do. Alot of pricing is influenced by the aircooled scene there for the older the car the more its worth. old is gold!!!

Mk1 Roccos undervalued? No - I brokered the sale of a very well known Storm about four years ago and, compared to that beaut, remain amazed at the prices some people expect to get.
Compared to, eg, the cars that Mr Brown has re-acquired, people assuming £2.5-4k as a going rate for cars in need of bodywork/rebuild need to have a rethink. People who think that there is money to be made out of these should probably revert to golfs/aircooled to fulfill £/ambitions.
Mk1 prettier than a Mk2 - yes but, in comparison, made from cream crackers. Mk1 was both styled by an Italian and built to 70's Fiat standards sadly.
Mk1 and Mk2 golfs over-priced? yes.
Counting down the days to being able to drive my own Mk1? Definitely.

Having exhibited both MK 1&2's and observed the type of person who shows intrest.
To some up the MK1 seems to be the "thinking mans" choice, over a MK1 Golf. MK2's seem to attract a wider group of fans. Dare I say, both MK1&2's seem to attract a certain type of "beardy, anorak, MG," type of person (Sorry Sean
) Corrado's seen to atract a totally different audience. For a car thats over 20 years old, the Corrado owners seem a lot younger.
As for looks MK1 or 2 I like both but the MK1 has the edge. A very pretty car. MK2's best described as "Handsome" MK2 is 100000% better rust protected than MK1's. MK2's are exceptionally cheap for what you get and good value

I dont buy the rust thing as a negative to the mk1, to me all it means is that if you have a rust free one then it should make it all the more desirable, the series 1 mk1 golf was just as bad for rust. I dont see the fact the mk2 scirocco didnt rust as much as a positive either for desirability, practicality of ownership maybe.

Possibly it's why Scirocco folk have been marginalised in the VW scene in the past? Oh and as for mk1 values, yes they are low because most need a ton of body work. For a really good one you still pay top whack, probably over 4k? It's golfs that are over priced rather than the other way round
