wiring for ignition barrel

Post by parch »

Hi

Some very kind, thoughtful considerate nob'eds have crowbarred my door and taken the ignition wires out to hotwire my car.

I can't work out which wire goes back in which connection on the back of the ignition barrel
Anyone know or can point me to where I can find this out.

There's one small grey one and the rest are the same size:
one black
one red
one red&black
one yellow&black

On the back of the barrel there's connectors for all of the big wires and then two little connectors so I'm not even sure where the little grey wire goes

If I connect the black one to the red one the lights go on and then if I connect the red&black one to them both it starts the engine.
so the red&black must be starter and i guess black is neutral red is live.

does anyone know which sockets they go into on the back of the barrel?
and also what the wires are?
and where do I put the small grey wire?

if you look at the back of the switch, the pins have terminal numbers on them. you should be able to look the switch up in the haynes manual wiring diagram and get the colours and terminal numbers from that.

and yes, black and red is the starter :P

doing it the long winded way, one of them will be permenant live coming in, the rest will be switched lives feeding other circuits. if you spend half an hour with a multi meter, you should be able to work out what the connections to the switch are (i.e. which pins are connected to each other (or not) with the key in different positions. by then feeding each wire in turn from the permenant live and making a note of what they feed, you should be able to work it out using a bit of logic

Thanks Nate you are a star! Will check ye olde haynes bible.

I was gonna take the barrel off anyway as they have knacked the steering lock so I guess I can get a proper look at it then,
it's a bit awkward to get behind there when the barrel is in it's place.

Think I'm better off doing it with the manual, if I tried to do the longwinded way I would end up with an electric fire or shorting the electrics :dash:
