Joti's VW Scirocco Typ 53 from 78!!

Post by Joti »

Hello

My name is Samuel Alves and i'm from Portugal.

Recently i have a bought a 1978 VW Scirocco Typ 53 1.1GT woth 4 speed.

I'm the second owner of it, it has 129.000kms on the clock.

My ideias are a full restauration project, and add some goodies to it.

First some pics of it:

Now, some help,

I want to swap the engine, and what is the best:

- VW Polo 86C 3f with ahd gearbox, most known has the 1.3GT with 75hp, with bike carbs and some more mod's on it.
- VW Polo 86C G40engine.

I really would like to put the g40 engine on it, but i wanted it full stock with the compressor,
How hard it to do this swap to the rocco???

Has anyone tried it, i saw an user that used a G40 engine on it's rocco with carbs and turbo.

But i wanted it full stock.

Can you give me help, and guidance??

Cheers

Do you have any pictures of your engine bay? Sound like an awesome project :good:

The hard part of doing a g40 conversion is fabicating the engine mount as in the polo it supports the supercharger. other than that its very much like doing a Polo GT conversion.

I will try and dig out some guides from the mk1 owners club and im happy to help with any questions you might have :hi:

I would aprecciate very much to see some guides.

For now, a mate made the same conversion in MK1 Golf 5door 1.3cc to G40, and all went ok and had no need to fabricate the engine mount, because put a turbo on it.
A K03 from a 1.8T Audi A3.Custom headers, and Intercooler.

Maybe is the way i'm going to.

As for the Polo G40 gearbox and transmission's, is there any problem or fabrication to put them in the rocco???

Yes, fur sure, mate i'll keep this updated.

In the weekend arrived wheels: OZ Turbo, 2 - 7x15 ET15 and 2 - 7.5x15 ET09.
Soon to be transformed to: 2 wheels in 7.5x15 ET15 and the other 2 wheels in 8.5x15 ET09, all four with Nankang NS-2 in 185 45 15.

In body restauration, will install the fenders from a Golf Mk1, to be like this:

And i'm trying to buy a second set of wheels, wich are Rial Cobra.

For now that's all.

Cheers

BBS RM, i already have bought new center caps for them.

Soon to be modified.

As for the engine, i'm looking for a good g40, to start the conversion/swap.

Nice collection :chill:

Mk1 G40 guide - http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php ... ic&t=33263

Gearbox mount wise... the front fits with zero modification. the rear needs a little trimming to fit. the top needs one making out of the polo g40 bottom, mk1 1.3 top & welding together. I will find a picture haha

Many thanks Winston.

That info will be helpfull.

But now appear something, that i was almost impossible to appear in Portugal:

VW ABA engine 2.0cc 8v 115cv, the donor car:

The good thing about this engine, is that is crossflow, and excellent to install 2 twin webber's on it!!

And it's a very good price.

What it's your opinion about this engine, i'm seeing that it's easy to install it on mk1!!

Cheers

Car looks great, but if I was gonna do this engine swap I would hold out for the Mk3 2.0 16v engine... :good:

I gave up 2.0 8V ABA engine because it was obd II.

And it was a nightmare to swap electrical part's to the rocco.

I'm going to stick with the g40 engine swap.

Some new part's arrving for the Rocco:

Complete VW Corrado G60 brakes, front and rear, with all component's:

And my wheel collection, for the rocco:

Kerscher Carmona em 7.5/9 x 16, offset 15, 4x100;
Ria Cobra em 8 x 15, offset 18, 4x100;
OZ Turbo em 7/7.5 x 15, offset 15/9, 4x100;
BBS RM em 6.5 x 15, offset 33, 4x100.

For now.

I really want some HTN or Tramont/PLS in 14"

This how it is now.

Engine wise:
I already bought AFT 1.6 8V crossflow from a Golf mk3, anyone knows if i can use a golf mk1 gti gearbox with it??

Looking forward to hearing your opinion's.

Cheers

Looking good dude

Yes you can use your scirocco gearbox but you will need to use the mk1 clutch and flywheel to the AFT

Nice project - hope it's not too rusty, from being in the dry climate of Portugal.

I'd suggest a bigger engine, but it depends on local laws and insurance, I guess.

Like the seats - are you keeping them? I could do with a front right hand seat in that pattern ;)

Thanks mate.

I'm thinking in use a complete golf mk1 GTI gearbox, with clutch and flywheel of it to the AFT.

As the golf mk1 gti gear selector/linkages.

The car is pretty solid, it only has one bit of agressive rust nearer the front window.

The rest has some rust but only at surface.

I choose this engine mainly because it's a crossflow, i wnat to use bike carbs on it.

I'm keeping the seat's and will use them on the car, they are in very conditions.

Cheers

Cool... Mk1 Golf and Mk1/2 Scirocco gearboxes are pretty much the same, btw, although being a 1.1 litre, yours probably has an 084/085 gearbox rather than the 020 type you get on the bigger engines. You may well know that already, but just to be sure.
