Sun roof leak
Ok so after a great noght of cleaning and t-cutting and washing ready for Alltypes, i got in to the car to back it up when a load of water drops onto me shoulder!!!!! i get out to find that the seal around the tilt and slide sunroof had cracked and sunk!!!! si i assume that too much waster had got in and overflowed from the inside drain gutter.
so i have 2 questions, is this easy to replace asuming i can get one in a usable state?
and the drain holes that run from it, what tpe of wire is best to check if its clear?
Cheers
Heath
oh and does anyone have a seal?????

Re: Sun roof leak
i only know how to remove the sunroof, not change the seal.
but, if you open the sunroof fully, you'll see numerous small phillips head screws holding down the wind deflector, arms and the sliding rails; unscrew all of these. then remove the winder from inside the car and the mechanism behind it.
the whole lot will then pull out. you'll need to manually pull the sunroof hood as far forward as you can, then push the sliding rails back towards the rear of the car, this should give you enough room to slide the whole lot out in one go then. if you've a concours car, be careful not to scratch your roof when removing this lot.
its pretty self explanatory to remove it all, just take note of what you remove :)
when you have the whole lot off the car, to remove the hood from the rails theres a few PZ2/3 screws to take out. again, all very simple. just take note of the orientation of things.
it should then be a case of changing the seal on the hood, but im not sure if theres any special technique for this :)
hope this helps mate

Re: Sun roof leak
yeah should all come up through the roof simple enough. i wouldnt want to remove the liner either haha.
the inner sunroof seal is mounted to the roof, the felt outer seal is attached to the sun roof hood.
and for cleaning the drain holes id just stick an air line down them, or some pipe cleaners/water.

Re: Sun roof leak
The outer sunroof "seal" isn't watertight anyway - hence the need for the drainage pipes front and rear (though if it's completely knackered a lot more water will get past).
The Haynes description is very helpful for removing the roof - I haven't had to follow the re-installation instructions so can't vouch for them (hopefully more comprehensive than "the reverse of removal).
I have a few bits and bobs for sunroofs lying around if you find anything else missing/broken.

mines split and sunk, so waters just falling in :( i suppose it didnt help that the car was parked on a fall so was probably holding water and when it jumpt when i moved it vertopped the drainage channelthe edmundator wrote:The outer sunroof "seal" isn't watertight anyway - hence the need for the drainage pipes front and rear (though if it's completely knackered a lot more water will get past).

Re: Sun roof leak
Just the sunroof panel needs to come out to fit a new seal. The old seal will just clip off and the new onr just clips back on, no screws.
The dealers still sell the seal, I think about £40 or so.
They come longer than is needed and require cutting to length (carefully!).

Re: Sun roof leak
i'd check the drains thoroughly before you start spending money. i've yet to see one leaking that was caused by the 'seal' letting too much water through. i used a very ling flexable wire brush to clean them (designed for cleaning trombones)
with the sunroof fully open, carefully pour water into the gutter and make sure it is draining out. you shouldn't easily be able to pour water into the gutter faster than it can drain away, without soaking the interior

Re: Sun roof leak
£59, I would be asking for a discount, you don't ask etc,etc!
I used pipe that was a smaller diameter to clean out my drain pipes, I bought a length from B & Q, and fed it down, did the job.

Re: Sun roof leak
Nate, you were right, had a blocked drain hole, and the git was the rear drivers side, so i had to remover the sunroof, to be honest its really easy, just should have read the instructions more as i tried to get it out with the roof rolled all the way back and did this-

and after half an hour or so of trying to get something between the outer and inner roof came up with this, bit of plasic piping (been in the shed for years with a "that will come in useful" mark on it, nearly went to the tip last weekend) and some electical wire. Just fed the pipe to the drain and pushed the wire through to clear the blockage-

never been so proud to see the car have a leak-

fitting the roof though is a bugger
let just say its closed but still needs adjustment as the Haynes manual dosent tell you that the "closed"position when the pin comes out on the winder is set on the crank not in the sun roof mechanism. so you need to refit the whole lot, wind it all the way back, unscrew everything to free up the crank wheel, set it to the open position, reassemeble, check if it will close and tilt, then adjust to get it perfect by doing the perviois steps again. This took an hour in to the dark, finished at 10pm lastnight in the dark, but it just needs some adjusting :)
the standing water though had caused some damage, namelt to the support arm for the wind deflector which had obvioulsy been sat in water and rusted, so mush so the end ahd rusted off that hold it against the deflector!!!!! so need a new one
the joys of rocco ownership lol
thanks for everyones help mch appreciated

Re: Sun roof leak
I'm sure there is another source for this seal somewhere, like for a passat
IIRC It's got fabric rapped round it and actually allows water to seep through and allow it to drain away through the drain holes. I remember using the outer sheath of a bicycle brake cable to unblock them on a Golf.
I would ask on CGTI maybe in the in Mk2 Golf section, maybe do a search on there.

Re: Sun roof leak
it is a common part, when i went to VW i gave the guy the part code, and watched as he scolled down past the Passat, Golf, Polo etc to get to the rocco so all the same price.
oh and i did as for a discount, apparently its one of the few parts they dont offer one on due to the dealer not getting a discount!!!!!

Re: Sun roof leak
A little tip which was done at the factory when built. They applied a small amount of sealant in the bottom of the sunroof seal groove. In the groove of the furry sunroof seal which grips the sunroof lid metal edge, apply some rubbery glue or brake caliper piston grease. The gripping part of the sunroof seal onto the metal sunroof panel is not water tight!
Water will work its way round the channel from outside to inside by capilliary action and end up on the underside of the sunrrof panel. Drip, drip, drip onto the inner sliding panel that you can see on the inside of the Scirocco roof.
