Re: This thing. Is it important?
when mine was still running a carb, i had one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260505984251 as a coarse pre-filter (you can just open them and wash them out when they get clogged up) followed by a finer disposable filter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140728430984 like that. these would be fitted before the fuel pump. if you're being uber paranoid, you could then fit a 3rd between the swirl pot and the carb. particularly useful if you suspect that the swirl pot may have rust in it.

Re: This thing. Is it important?
My motor factors sold a large one and a small one, I found if I used a large one the filter never looked particularly full of fuel and made me think it could cause fuel starvation problems so I stuck with the smaller ones. Think they were about 70p each so I always carried spares.
Hope its all sorted now.

You could try the dealers, they may still stock the in line filters, at least you will know you are getting the correct part and it will fit!

On the fuel filter I have two one is the usual plastic one. and the one on at the moment is a glass and chrome one, of which you can split and clean and re-assemble and use again.
part number for the glass filter cpo3264 from cpc.co.uk .

Ok, so just to get this straight, I'll have something like this:
Also, the idle adjustment screw on the peirburg - where is it? I can't find the cheeky fella.
My final (I hope!) question is regarding ignition leads. The leads in the car at the moment appear to be in the wrong places. I think they're plugged into the right sockets on the dizzy cap and the plugs (I haven't swapped their places since getting the car) but some of the longer leads are in places where I think the shorter ones should be, and vice versa.
Is this likely to cause any trouble or can I safely switch them around, so long as the right plugs are connected to the right cap sockets?
You guys have been utterly fantastic and I hope this is the end to the issues. And I hope to get more involved with the friendly banter around here too. You're all very welcoming.

If it's got tits or wheels - it's trouble.

Re your carb adjustment screws if it is a 2E2 this may help you.

Re: This thing. Is it important?
i'd suggest this:
re plug leads, the longest lead should go tot he plug furthest away from the dizzy and the shortest to the closest. kinda logical i guess. quite common to see cars that have had one or two leads fitted, rather than a full set, which may qaccount for the odd looking lead lengths. but, you can swap them round if you want, so long as you keep the plugs connected tot he right port on the dizzy to keep the firing order right. but if it ain't broke...

Hi Alex
Hope you get this sorted without too much trouble fella.. I'm really surprised its started playing up because I never had any trouble with it running or stalling before.
When we fitted the clutch repair plate I did remove the carb (like i said in my email) but never messed with the jets or anything and it started up no probs afterwards. all i did was take it off by disconnected a couple of water pipes, the throttle cable, and the fuel lines and un-screwed it, then put it back on and connected everything back up again. it started first time, no issues and ran ok all the way down to meet you - even in the 20min traffic jam i got stuck in.. We didnt touch the ignition side of things - tbh i didnt even look at it.
Cheers, James

Thanks Nate,
That's awesome. I'll do that. I just ordered the parts last night and will get them put on the way you've suggested. I'm a little OCD so I'll switch the leads and make sure they're in the right place for the right firing order.
James,
It's no issue, really! It drove like a dream from Birmingham to London, and got me to and from work no problem at all for a week. I was just baffled as to how it's just stopped working is all. In all honesty, a 27 year old car is going to need maintenance anyway but it did catch me off guard and wanted to get it going as soon as possible.
I think Nate has hit the nail on the head though as blasting the idle jet with carb cleaner seems to have helped so far, though I've not tested it properly. As you'd done such little mileage in the car since having it, I should have replaced a few of the parts anyway (its something I tend to do when getting a new car regardless!)
Love the car and can't wait to drive it more. So if you're feeling bad or anything, please don't - I've no regrets buying it from you.
Going to get the filters fitted on the weekend and tweak the idle adjustment, and take it for a loooong drive to make sure all is ok
