having trouble with my mk 1 gti.
after starting up after the winter, the oil pressure lamp illuminated as well as handbrake with lever released, the oil level is exactly where it should be and i noticed the oil temp gauge is not moving up at all.
i suspect the oil pump is worn to excess, anyone have any other ideas ???

richard

Re: oil pressure issue.
oil temp or oil pressure guage?
the fact that the brake warning light is on too would suggest that you've got an electrical fault. that said, if you have any doubt as to the health of the oil pump, then i think i'd want to get an oil pressure test done before running the engine again for peace of mind.
when you have run the engine, does it sound like it hasn't got any oil pressure?

Re: oil pressure issue.
Remove the four spark plug leads from the plugs (make sure you keep note of which one goes to which), ground the king lead off the coil, remove all four spark plugs and crank the engine on the starter in neutral.
This should spin the engine over quick enough to build pressure - remove oil filler cap and look to see if oil is getting to the camshaft. Is there plenty of oil about under the rocker cover?

Re: oil pressure issue.
On the MK1 the oil and hand break warning lights are designed to come on together in the case of pressure failure, a vw machanic told me this in the 80.s
I had the same problem....It turned out to be the pressure sender..
hope this helps.

Re: oil pressure issue.
Just had the same problem myself on my mk1 GLS, oil level was fine and i changed the pressure sender but it was still the same, turned out to be the oil pump had seized, as bensspares said the handbrake light comes on with the oil pressure light, new pump and all is fine again.
