How should i Rustproof my mk1 scirocco???
How should i Rustproof my mk1 scirocco???
Hi all,
just got my mk1 scirocco resprayed after getting new sills and rear arches fitted etc and as i really, really, really don't want to go through all that again i was wondering how to rustproof it while it is still in bits ie no interior fitted or trim inside or out.
1) should i pay someone to do a proper job and come out and do that cavity waxoil thing?
2) Should i do it myself, i'm not a mechanic, so not sure what to use on it.
(car's in Liverpool so i'm not aware of any mobile waxoil service as yet)
Any advice much appreciated.
Mal.

I would waxoil waxoil waxoil (Or Dinitrol) Until its coming out of every orifice!
Idealy rear axle and petrol tank out. Proffessionals can be expensive, A friend had a Transit camper done for about £900. Not sure how much a Scirocco would be
Ive got all the gear compressor and gun with all attachments. Im sure you can hire a compressor. Not sure about gun and attachments.
Pick a nice warm day to do it

all the cavities (inside the sills, chassis rails etc) want to be treated with cavity wax. then i'd do under the wheel arches, inner wings etc with black shutz - this kinda thing http://www.autopaintsbrighton.co.uk/3m- ... 1530-p.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

never take it out in the rain, never take it out the uk between the months of November and May. 2 sure fire ways to inhibit rust on a mk1. I used my GTi as a daily for 3 winters and watched it disintigrate before my eyes.

Shultz is "ok" but tends to age badly. Some shultz will only take to bare metal. Not a good start, I would prefer a good anti corrosive undercoat then a good coat of smoothrite or similar. Followed by wax (Belt 'n braces job ;) )Nate wrote:all the cavities (inside the sills, chassis rails etc) want to be treated with cavity wax. then i'd do under the wheel arches, inner wings etc with black shutz - this kinda thing http://www.autopaintsbrighton.co.uk/3m- ... 1530-p.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I prefer to use clear waxoil as you can see if any rust is starting to form and treat it quickly. Whereas if you use anything like underseal/schultz you wont know if any rust has started under there unless you clean it all off.

Look at all the pics of MK1s under restoration (The one's left that is) on this forum or any other - they all rot in the same places.
When I last did the bodywork on my Storm in '96 I was doing it for keeps and not again, :o it was literally dripping with Waxoil out of all the cavity's when it came out of the bodyshop. Now I'm doing it again
Without a doubt, leaving my Storm outside has not done it any good, (which is why I extended my Garage).
The only sure-fire-way of keeping the steel from oxidising on a Mk1, is to keep water, salt etc away from it - that means the English weather.
I reckon moving to California has a lot going for it if you intend keeping one for a considerable time and can't be arsed with all the hassle that goes with.
Re: How should i Rustproof my mk1 scirocco???
We used the 3M 8901 Cavity wax and used about 6 cans to fill every bit of it until it started coming back out of the car so we knew there was enough protection - on a really hot day it does tend to weep out still so hopefully this has done the trick ;)

For the underneath we did this:

scraped it all down and removed all the rust and then used the Terson Terotex underbody coating wax:

this was used on the underneath, inner tops of the front wings, wheel arches and also the lower parts of the body:

and then painted to match body colour:

Also fitted MK2 golf plastic front wheel arch liners

4 of us gently lifted it over, the shell is surprisingly light with no running gear or glass
