mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
I'm planning on getting a new petrol tank from gsf this coming weekend and was wondering about the fixing plates that bolt the tank to the body. mine are pretty crusty - as was the tank so seems a shame to bolt these back on to the fresh tank. Anyone know if these are available new anywhere? I'm also not sure what to call them so that's hindering my searching ability's.
Thanks!

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
You may find they are called straps.
If you cant get new ones may be worth getting blasted and powder coated.

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
been a while since i've been under a mk2, but is the tank just held in place by 2 steel straps running under the tank? if so, steel strip is easy to get hold of to make up new ones. you just need to bend them to shape (use the old one as a rough template) then drill holes as appropriate. many manufacturers fit a rubber layer ontop of the strap to "seal" it - stops water getting between the strap and the tank and causing rust
Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
Thanks for the replys. I know mk2 golfs and a few other VWs use the strap style fixings but on my mk2 rocco at least Its held on by small D shaped plates that bolt to the body and overlap the flat edges of the tank. I will try and get some pics up tonight if i get the chance.

got a local engineering place? go in at lunchbreak and get them to cut some for you. get them powder coated afterwards, job done :)
or buy a bit of suitable sized steel and a hacksaw/grinder/plasma cutter

I've just done the tank on my Mk2 on saturday and it has metal straps but is an early one with the smaller tank! had them powder coated and they look like new.

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
This is my later 89 GT's rusty tank with the plates mentioned that hold the tank in. I am hoping I can either de-rust these or even make something to replace them when I fit a fresh or de-rust this tank

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
Those are the ones
Realistically I think mine would probably clean up ok with a blast and powdercoat. Thought it was worth an ask though in-case they were available for a few quid and to save me the trip to the painters.

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
Hi are you sure Gsf have got fuel tanks. I was told they hadn't. Therefore after my tank on 1992 gt2 started leaking i to had to buy a second hand one off ebay which i fitted last wednesday. An absolute nightmare of a job. And guess what, the second tank started leaking on sunday afternoon. So i bought another off ebay. This time new and from germany (probably the wrong one). So please don't tell me gsf are selling tanks, or i will be right pissed off.creg wrote:I'm planning on getting a new petrol tank from gsf this coming weekend and was wondering about the fixing plates that bolt the tank to the body. mine are pretty crusty - as was the tank so seems a shame to bolt these back on to the fresh tank. Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
I hope they do... I was under the impression that the tanks are the same as on a mk1 golf. Mines a later larger tank version (spacesaver spare wheel) so was thinking a 55ltr golf Cabriolet tank would fit- as your right, scirocco ones aren't listed anywhere. Can anyone confirm these are compatible?

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
I'm looking at tanks too at the moment.
Mine has some bad spalling in a couple of places on the seams. I might be able to get it welded, but I'm thinking there may be more stuff I don't know about so maybe it's not worth it. Is there a product you can line tanks with??
VW Heritage have the 40l one listed but I'm not sure if it will fit the Mk2 Rocco. Mine fixes with the D plates that I have saved. I'll probably call them on Monday.
Or, as my car is being stripped out I may ditch the OEM one and put a alloy one in the back.
I'd prefer to get a replacement though if it's available at reasonable cost.

Is that light at the end of the tunnel or a train coming the other way?

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
GSF were selling them, I'm out of the loop with parts availability just now
Think this would do the job..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PETROL-FUEL-T ... 1c25ce3fc7
As far as welding a tank tread carefully as it would have to be purged (filled with water) to eliminate any chance of petrol fumes. There are tank sealer treatments that allow you to seal a rusty tank from..
http://www.rust.co.uk/
and
http://www.frost.co.uk/
I'd try and get a new one and make sure it is well protected from the elements. As far as an alloy one in the back the consensus is (from what I've read) that they are not a great idea as they transfer weight to a higher point in the car.

Re: mk2 Fuel Tank Fixings
That's spot on that is. Thanks very much for the link I'll get one on order.
The issue of the weight higher up is something I had considered and I was possibly going to opt for a smaller 6 gal tank 2ft x 1ft x 6" high as a result. I was thinking that putting it right at the back may balance the car better front to back, but then there is also the matter of a possible shunt up the rear which might not be very clever.
Now I can re-use my filler pipe after a bit of a refurb and just renew the soft pipework, it will be as the designers intended and it will probably work out cheaper.
I will still run the fuel lines in the car and I've got some aircraft grade glass cloth I might cover the underside of the tank with for protection or maybe some rubberised spray paint.
Before I take the plunge though I might just give the old one a better look over. I was going to wash it out before welding it
Thanks again for the link.

Have you tried Euro Car Parts, actually spoken to them as they are showing a listing on their website when I enter my Scala reg number.
Just a thought and £98!
