Looking for advice on bonnet bras for the Mk2 ...

Post by Cpt Custom »

With Lily’s bonnet due to be painted later this week I’ve found myself starting to think about getting a bonnet bra for when I do any serious mileage in her. Seems a waste to go to all the time and expense of getting it put right for some tosser to cut me up first time out and then I’m back at square one.

So, I’m looking for any advice/recommendations you guys can offer: who has one fitted; who supplies them and at what cost; how are they attached; are there any drawbacks apart from the fact they don’t look that great when fitted; etc?

I’ve already had a search on here, but couldn’t find much. There was an old thread, but that didn’t throw up much other than the fact that there were only a couple of companies that seemed to do them.

And from what I can find online now, things haven’t moved on much.

Autobra do this one, which seems to cover the entire front nd including the bumper, for £115:

JK Autospares do a much cheaper one at only £65, down from £82:

From the photo though I’d say this is the Autobra one minus the bumper section. :dunno:

I did see another thread on the Register in which Blueshark said he might be able to get some Dutch ones at a decent price, but again that posted way back in 2009.

I’ll drop him a PM to see if he still has any contacts, but any other comments etc would be appreciated.

This is the one I had - but just used the top section as in your pic above

It's around $70-$80 but I think it's made to order now so takes a few weeks - by the time you add in shipping to the UK it ends up being more expensive than the Ebay/JK one.

*just a thought - if it's protecting the paint you're after, what about something like Lamin-X ?

There was a company at Harewood House last year selling them.
It may be worth looking in the programme to see if there was an advert.
I've put mine in a "safe place" and can't find it now
I've got a square of vinyl that I was having a look at with the view to making one up myself," "It shouldn't be too difficult" "
Bit of vinyl, two toblerone packets (empty), big needle, thimble and elastic tape to hook it on somewhere under the bonnet = job done.

Thanks Mr Brown Couple of 'stupid' questions back at you:

What's the difference between the base model and the 16V as far as the masks go ... I assume it's to do with the bodykit in which case as mine is a GT would that mean I'd need the 16V one?

Also, if these are made Stateside would I be right to assume the full mask/bra would be designed to fit the bigger US bumpers in which case they'd not suit the UK models?

I appreciate you might not know the answers, but thought I'd ask as you've been kind enough to offer some initial advice.

As for the Lamin-X, I hadn't thought of going down that route at all. :good:

Just need to remember where I put mine now!

As for making one, I did seriously wonder about that, but as with so many things it's often best to buy something off the shelf.

Maybe not Neil, but does it work and would you recommend it? :dunno:

If so, mind if I ask where you got it and how much it cost? :beers:

Sorry for the delay Paul. Glad you got the car back & I totally agree it's not good getting the touch up out to repair the damage from the bodyshop. I know how it feels and it spoils the enthusiasm of getting it back. Back to the topic. I got it on american eBay for about 90 dollers plus postage. I would recommend it but don't leave it on if it is raining. The inside has a material that holds water.
