Coolant hose

Post by DanH »

Soo, upon investigating a small but persistent coolant leak it turns out almost all the coolant hoses in the engine bay are leaking from the clip area.

Already had a couple of new hoses knocking about as I've meant to replace one for a while...figured I might as well change the lot rather than messing about, however, I can't find the right ones. The diagram and hoses on VW heritage don't match what's in the engine bay and I can't seem to find all the hoses elsewhere online either.

Any ideas where to find them?

Also, haven't been using G11 coolant, could that be to blame? Seems a bit odd that everything would suddenly decide to spring a leak at once.

Cheers

Give your local VW dealer a shout, hopefully he/she will like older cars and help you out!

As long as you don't mix coolants that aren't meant to be mixed then it should be ok. Coolant should be changed every few years anyway to keep the acidity level down. I'm changing mine to G12 this year. I'll let you know if I have an issues.

Don't know if it's of any use but I had a similar problem on a smaller level. Turned out t be the weather, as soon as I'd run the engiia bit and the hoses had warmed up an moulded themselves round the pipes they were fine but that was because I was changing everything over.

I've recently been in the same position as you, so I hope my advice is useful.

First off, the VW Heritage diagram is slightly confusing but, assuming you've got a carb'd 1.6 or 1.8 Mk2, then they do supply all the hoses you need (I've just bought a set of the main hoses) - best check the part numbers on VagCat first then you can tell them exactly what you want. They will supply you with Meyle hoses (made in Germany).

You cannot get hold of the main hoses now from VW - even VW Classic Parts in Germany. However, VW Classic Parts do stock the Meyle brand hoses themselves and therefore sell them as being genuine parts, so you can be assured that these are endorsed by VW.

Frustratingly though, the top hose (533121101F) part is now the same pattern as for the Mk2 Golfs, and has quite a tight 's' shape to it, rather than the gently slant of the same part fitted at the factory.

I would think twice about moving over to G12. G12 is one of the OAT based coolants that's standard fayre on modern cars. These coolants flow much better around the engine (thinner) and therefore are better at cooling, as well as being longer life. Modern engines take much less coolant than older designs like ours (typically only around 3 litres), and so need these types of coolants to help avoid meltdown.

My garage recently decided to try an OAT-based coolant in my car to help improve the running temperature of my car (see previous posts on the subject), which did the trick. I'd previoously used Comma G12 without problems. My car is low mileage and as straight-as-they come, with hoses and connections all in good condition. However, it wasn't long before I noticed coolant weeping from under the expansion hose joint and the bottom hose joint; the latter being secured by a Jubilee-type clip, which is about as secure as you can get.

All antifreezes will want to find leaks, but OAT collants are even more potent at finding them - they will easily find leaks on older cooling system circuits like ours.

I thought 'if it could start a leak here, where else could be next? the heater matrix?', so I have changed back to G11 to be on the safe side - no leaks now. I've also decided to take take off the car's original main hoses (top, bottom and pump-to-block pipes) and fit brand new ones from both VW Heritage and VW Classic Parts. Originality is fine, it dawned on me that running around with 26 year-old hoses (although supple & in good condition) is a bit like being proud that your house still has the same wiring in it from the 1950s or something - you're only a step away from disaster!
