Suffering real bad from sloppy gears, seem to have more travel front to back, than left to right, probs getting 1st to engage too.
Bought the bushes and everything to tighten it all up again, which turned up today, started stripping it down from the gear stick end first, then got to the relay shaft, and noticed the allen head bolt was more or less hanging out .
Am having real probs getting the shouldered bolt through the bushes in the bottom of the stick,is there a knack to doing this, spent about 45 mins trying today, and gave up as getting dark and raining

Re: Shouldered bolt, through bottom of gear stick
All done, found daylight and a hammer helped that and copious amounts of grease.
No longer have a wobbly gear stick and all gears engage.
I followed the guide on the mk1 golf owners club, which said 19mm clearance between the shift finger and the metal plate, but in the Haynes book of lies it says between 13 and 15 mm,it is too easy to put in reverse , without pushing the stick down, and I also have to sort of go through the gears a bit to get it to come out of reverse,is that 19 mm clearance set right ?

All sorted now,cheers Pete !!
Do think the cir clip supplied in the kit,is slightly too big,as it's come out the groove a couple of times,so will have to see if I can locate the old one from the darkest recesses of my tool box
