I have just fitted a 6 bolt manifold and new down pipe to my GTII, the main reason was because the old toilet bowl manifold and down pipe had cracks.
I was wondering if it is essential for the heat shields to go back on, the new 6 bolt down pipe is allot different to the old one and the original heat shields don't fit.
Just wondering if it was a major issue, bearing in mind the 4 into one manifolds I have seen don't seem to have the provision.
Thanks in advance.

After having the boot on the UJ melt before I make sure that I have a heatshield fitted.
Maybe some heat bandage around the exhaust would do the trick.

The exhaust bandage is what I was thinking but before going out in the cold for a couple of hours I though I would ask if any one had bad experiences of not having one.

be very careful with exhaust rap, I know someone who lost their Mk1 Golf because of a leak at the carb, the frayed edges of the rap material provided the perfect wick to start a serious fire as had absorbed the fuel. Admittedly it was round the carb area and wasn't well secured.
Sorry for thread jacking, having just removed a very rotten down pipe that didn't appear to have a heat shield I have since discovered my boot is cracked and split. I'll make a make short term repair on the boot with a piece of rubber as it seems to be an expensive rare part. There is a kind of shield on the gear linkage and the one under the gear stick.
I have the following downpipe ready to fit with fresh c-clips but not even sure of heat shields
I have aluminium heat shield stuff, looks like waffles
I might use it in some way.

Did the original pipe have a built in shield or brackets? Any pictures of it? I'll maybe have a look at the Haynes

Re: Heat Shields for steering UJ's
Thought I would add this. I've got to replace the steering rack boot/bellows as it has clearly dried out and perished because of the lack of a heat shield. So whilst looking for guides on how to change the boot I stumbled across an EKTA picture and a great picture of an original shield on the downpipe..

You can see how close the heat source is..

Here is my boot which I tore off in disgust
Got a new one coming from Crazy Quiffs..

Also the guide for changing the boot that had the pictures..
