Oh man I certainly hope so :beg:

Still not established what exactly was the problem. Dirt in carb? Rubber base leak? dirty plugs? or dodgy HT leads? or one or more of these??

I'm going to remove the sender at some point, see what's lurking on the gauze/plastic thing of the pick up. Might do that fuel filter trick on the end of the pick up?

I see you got a filler neck you lucky so and so :ire:  :bye:

So did you ever find out what the problem was?? I'm having similar issues and can empathise with your frustration reading this thread!

My mechanic recons it's either an air leak(possibly rubber baseplate mount) or spark plugs/HT leads, or a combination of both...

Anyway would be good to hear if/how you resolved it.

Cheers,

Jim

Since I got it running that last time I've had no problems with the carb. Still don't know exactly what was happening to this day. Either some sort of spec of dirt that eventually found it's way out or the carb base leaking. I think in the end I put a bead of Hylomar on every surface apart from where the carb joins the adaptor plate.

The only issue I have ever had is having to pump the accelerator a number of times to get it to start effortlessly. I think when it sits overnight the large Mk2 fuel lines I have made to fit allow the fuel to empty back out the swirl pot and carb basically by gravity. Well that's my theory :dunno:

One thing I was thinking of changing next if I had further issues is the swirl pot as I have read about them rotting internally which like the filler neck can get in the system. I also was close to examining the fuel pick up as I know the gauze can clog. You can modify a fuel filter to put on the end instead of the gauze which eliminates issues from that end.

I now unfortunately have a number of issues with my clutch and exhaust but that's the nature of these old motors

Good luck and post up how you get on :good:

It was my rotor arm.
The rotor arm itself was completely black and the dizzy cap wasn't much better...
After a good clean of the dizzy cap with soapy water and wire wool then dried (with the missus hairdryer...shhhh) and a new rotor arm she starts up first time and is back on the road

Probably should have thought to check this first but had changed it and the dizzy cap this time last year so thought it surely couldn't be the problem.. Big mistake!

So good to have this sorted as I was starting to get really down about the car, pleased it was such a simple fix, and to top it off had some welding done to the chassis today before her MOT and only set me back £50 which is well below what I was expecting..

just ordered myself new bush set for the gear linkage as a treat!!

On my Mk2 I have created a loop in the fuel line and attached it to a bracket before the carb to stop it running back I'll post a picture tomorrow, I found it was only a problem when I reversed into my drive as the slope of the drive pulled the fuel back. Once I realised it didn't happen when I pulled in the dive I altered it and its been great since.

I am still running a Peirburg but don't think that makes any difference??

I'm glad you got things sorted Jimbob :good: There is always something that crops up, my issues might well have been my rubbish HT leads.

I see you are buying linkage parts, Where are you buying them from? I'm looking at a full kit and was considering GPC vw parts (their new name) on :ebay: . They seem to have mainly original parts.

Also thanks for that solution with looping the fuel lines Gtsteve :good: certainly makes sense to me. Will look in to doing something similar.

Yeah I'm loving the car again now, especially after fitting this little fellow..took me all of 5 mins to fit.

If your having problems with your gear change then definitely check for this first!

Not sure if they're genuine parts but cant argue with that price..and if it fails again then at least i'll know what the problem is.

Also got this bush set on it's way from the same seller..
