car starts up and runs fine, but instead of sitting happily at about 1000 revs in neutral, its jumping up to 2000.
clutch in or out makes no difference. Also does it in 1st gear, but letting the clutch out as far as possible drops the revs to a level socially acceptable for sitting in traffic. as soon as i start moving along, the revs are normal.
now it might be my overactive imagination, or potentially an unrelated problem, but I also think theres a suspicious ticking/tapping noise over on the drivers side of the engine bay - both belts have been replaced recently and look fine to me, and I can't find anything loose...buggered piston ring? but this wouldn't cause the problem above though, and they seem to have started at the same time... hmmm.
my first thought was the autochoke (still running pierburg, yes i know) but i replaced the wax stat and the pulldown last year. plus in my experience that generally causes all kinds of rev issues at all speeds, with a variety of woody patches. so i'm a little stumped.
thoughts on where to start chaps?

Re: idling issues
I have to rush out right now ! but wanted to post quick reply.porkymcchop wrote:

Ticking = likely the solenoid at back off side of carb, the one with the rubber capped 2 wires going to it. (hard to get at with carb on, take carb off = easier and easy job)
Try temporarily earthing the brown wire with black stripe from the solenoid, this should make it stay open when the ign is on and if ticking stops you are three quarters the way to finding the problem
Common fault this, Bad wires, bad solenoid or bad relay 61 (witch is not a relay but a quite complex little circuit that controls tick-over when hot and when cold along with the waxstat).
Check some of my recent posts, I have helped a couple of folk out with Pierburh tick-over stuff.
Got to go, right now !
post back later :)
