Post by Mr Funk »

Morning all,

So here I am at the end of another show season. It's been a real roller coaster and a few times, especially at the beginning of the year I was ready to jack the whole thing and start something else, but all that pretty much disappeared out the windows when the car was back on the road and tearing tarmac apart. I was hoping to get to Players this weekend but with less than a week before my wedding and friends over from the states that looks highly unlikely, the car is now back at the barn and I've removed a few its so I can start playing as soon as I'm back from the honeymoon but realistically I think it'll be the New Year before anything meaningful happens. It's fairly crap thinking that I probably won't drive the car for a couple of months but when I think about it it isn't that bad. I'm not back until the middle of October and it'll take e a week or two to get my shizzle back what with work and whatnot. I've already ordered a few parts that I'll need and there's bits on the car that need sending to the Powder coaters so all it all it's not that bad.

The definate plan for next year is to drive the bloody thing more. What with everything going on this year I only ended up doing a couple of meets and festivals and it's a terrible waste so there's a commitment to do as many bits and pieces as I can. Groove, my long suffering GF and soon to be Waf wants to really focus on her racing next year so there's a vague chance we may end up with a Transporter to ship the boat about but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I'd love to play with one and I think it'd be the perfect stable mate for the Bandit but I want to focus on getting the Rocco finished before I go off and play with something else.

So the plan......

As it stands I have literally just ordered another job lot of acoustic carpet. It's been a total bastard to try and get hold of the good quality stuff but I think I;ve found it. This means I can set to work on the rear install (sub needs remounting and i'll put a VW cover over the wheel well in the same way I did with the cab plus there's a few bits that need cleaning up and I want to fit another electrical port and cup holders) and finally finish the front door cards. As some of you may have seen I've got the pods installed and they rock. The sound quality is superb and they look fairly standard. Unfortunately I'm not all that impressed with the comfort suede so that'll be coming off and everything will be recovered. Interior wise it's all fairly simple stuff and something I can tackle. The dash, for example, should only take a morning at most.

But obviously the big part will be the new engine. This I'm genuinely excited about.

The engine lift is all ready so it'll be pulled out, the gearbox'll get the long needed overhaul, the drive shafts'll get the good news with powder coating, I'll tody the engine bay (as far as possible with a bloody K-jet) and get everything fitted along with the newly improved tidy wiring.

God I can't wait.

So the wedding is out of the way and everything gets back on track.

Whole engine has been cleaned down and the gearbox has has a lick of paint. Got stainless selector rods to go on and I'll fit the powder coated rocker cover. Desperately looked for way to use the g60 rocker cover but seem a right pain in the arse. Samco hoses are all on and it'll get a new sump and water pump. For no other reason other than I just want new ones.
Oh, and I'll redo the interior

Back to the barn to play tomorrow. Just waiting on the Rocker cover gasket kit and the clutch cable then it can come home and get the new heart. Got all this delivered:

All this was old stuff that's been powder coated at the fantastic Paintwise in Margate for the princely sum of £30!

Purchased from Winston:

And got this from Veedubmachine (bloody excellent service)

Some small updates from today.

Cleaned up the holes for mounting the tweeters and fitted one. Perfect fit. Dash has a crack or two on it but that really is minor. Tweeters look factory fitted.

Also started rebuild the brake bar set up. Not as say as it first appeared as the two pivot arms arent the same. Ballhair

Gave the engine a final check over last night with Ben and made plans for next Friday.
I've got a really nice sized yard and all the garage space I'll ever need but it comes with a real problem: the gap to get it in between the houses is utterly terrifying. If you've ever seen you'll know exactly what I mean, it's got a kink about 3/4 of the way down and the wing mirrors and rear wheels have to come off. It's not me being precious, there's literally less than an inch either side.
But saying that it'll mean the rims are already off and can be sent off to Lepsoms.
Plan is that engine'll come out, give the bay a damn good clean (it's in surprisingly good nick for a 20 year old car, a spray down should be all that's needed). New lump goes in and everything gets hooked up. Once that's done I'll probably forget about it until after christmas then the dash and door cards'll get done ready for UD.

God I can't wait to have it back.

So there's been a bit of a delay with the postings and whatnot.

Progress isn't going too badly at all, engine came out within a morning and I've been building up the new engine and sorting the bay ready for the replacement. New alternator (did have an old shell powder coated but it was a pain in the arse), new water pump and a few other bits and pieces have gone on. Not because they had too, there's no question that the lump was absolutely fine, but just because I thought it deserved it.
Got up there again toda and had a bit of a wasted couple of hours. Tried fitting the new brake bar and gubbins but ended up taking it all off again as I thought it was the wrong one. Turns out it wasn't after all. Massive bollocks.

Ah well, can't have everything.

So I have it on good authority that we have have the engine back in and have the car running within a day but for that I need to get the brakes sorted so there's my motivation. Once that's done it's back here at the weekends for the interior in the run up to UD.

Get in.

Engine looks might tasty - Samco hoses?

Shame about the scratch - I'm sure I did the same the first time I tried fitting a bonnet on my own. Dishcloths come in handy now to prevent such damage.

Yeah, Samco.

Wouldn't have gone for them but Tony was selling them and I was openly lusting for them and they were Alpine blue (I like colour co ordination, don't you people judge me).
The scratch is pony but my own fault and the one mark on an otherwise spotless car, bloody irritating, especially this close to UD but hey Ho.
Engine is just what I wanted, immaculately maintained, p and p'd with cam. With everything else I'm hoping for 130/135. That'd make it quick enough for me I reckon.

Without blowing my own trumpet though (and god knows I've tried whilst drunk) I've never driven a Rocco that can handle quite as mentally.

Broken stud in the block. Tried using a tool to get it out and that snapped as well. Not a great day

Been there far too many times the last few months myself. Chin up dude, giving up is the easy option. Don't let the car win! :beers:
