Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
I have just purchased another Scirocco with the intention of putting this second Rieger body kit I have on it. Since the inital viewing i’m having abit of a guilty feeling about modifying it to such an extent.
The car is a 1985 GTL non body kitted version, its just been for sale on here. From inspection and looking through the history its what I would say is really good condition for a car of its age. Its got low milage (68000), over the last 8years has only covered about 5000miles.. From the looks of it is near 100% standard too. Now, as with all project cars – you want to start with a good one if your doing all the work to it, but I am thinking that this one may be too good to fit a full body kit too – maybe another GT11 would be more suitable? After a chat with the owner and doing abit of digging the DVLA says there are only 13 GTL’s left, and in any case the early Mk2 non bodykitted versions are becoming rarer – let alone finding such a clean example..
The question I am asking is: Would it be bad to modify this otherwise standard car? It does need some work which I will do, but maybe its best fixing up, re-MOT’ing and swapping for something that has already been tinkered with to then put the body kit on??
Your thoughts would be appreciated. I will get some pictures up this weekend when I can photo it in the daytime.

Well, it does sound like a shame to fiddle with such an original, especially one so rare.
My vote would go to leaving your GTL and finding something else to modify.
Only my opinion, of course. Car is yours to do as you please.
Anyways, pics??

I personally wouldn't but, it is your car and you should feel free to do with it what you will.
Sounds like a really nice, original example though, and that is ultimately what would make me look elsewhere for another scirocco to mod.

Have to agree it does seem a shame to mess with it - there are plenty of gt2s out there

It's your car, but if it was me I'd be more inclined to focus energies on keeping it standard, especially given the rarity. Even though it sounds as though it's been looked after, there'll always be something that needs repairing or renewing on a car 26 years old that will probably soak up time and cash.
Vive la difference I say - the non-kitted cars also look good. Perhaps an already-modified later model might prove a good base for the Rieger kit that you won't get the guilts over altering?

Who cares, do you? It's your car, do whatever makes you feel happy. My Rocco has 180,000 plus miles on it and I'm still as happy as Larry with it. If I wanted a kit on it I would , I would'nt give a monkeys about anyone else. There are only so many storms, 300 brown, 300 blue, ( been made) With your model and a body kit, do you want to be different or original. Your choice, do whatever suits you !!
Re: Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
As a few of you are saying, the final decisoin is up to me – i know that, just was wondering what the general thoughts were from you guys... I just had this niggly feeling that maybe I shouldnt. Still not sure, I am going to whip the bumpers off and offer the body kit up to the car to see what it looks like and then make my mind up..
The more I think about it, the more I think a good clean shell is the way to start.
Hoping it will instantly look like this!!

but thats not exactly likely..

Re: Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
got a few pics of the new car.

no engine bay shots but its pretty tidy bar the hole where the clutch cable comes though. plan is to fix that up, give it abit of a check over then re-mot it after xmas. the small spot of rust pictured above is just under the passenger door, so hopefully that wont be too hard to fix up too. both arches are in good nick, with only a small patch thats been welded in on infront of the osr wheel.

Re: Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
Personally I wouldn't.
Just on the grounds that Scirocco's in general are now going up in price and yours, being a rare model will go up faster as proper collectors (for want of a better word) start to get interested in them. The mere fact that you are thinking along those lines proves the point. 10 years ago you would have not been thinking like that and just "done it". Here is a car similar to yours (seller is on here apparently) that is listed at £1875 ;) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160689997187? ... 1438.l2649
As has been said, there are plenty of sub £1000 GTII's out there to do it to, though personally I would look for an injected scala as these are so plentiful (esp in white) that they are not dear to buy.
p.s. = that tail pipe is HORRIBLE

Re: Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
Today I will mostly be wearing two hats.
My first thought is to say screw everything and go for it. It's your car, fill your boots. I'm sorry but no matter what people may think or say Sciroccos are never going to be legitimate collectors vehicles. Prices now are fairly good but I really don't honestly think they'll go much higher and if they do it'll be in line with everything else. All I've ever heard since owning one (about 12 or 13 years at a rough guess) is that a Rocco renaissance is just around the corner and while the introduction of the superb MK3 has made an impact it isn't all that big. Just because the club and the cars have got a lot of well earned attention over the past few years doesn't mean they'll be getting the same kind of money as the Goofs/Rados etc
Some of the rarer examples may start getting good prices but that's about it I reckon. They'll always be niche cars but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. So I'd bin any thought of using it as an investment.
But saying that......
It is a great looking example. Not normally my thing the standard look but something about Velour gets me hot and sweaty in all the wrong places. And much as I hate to say it it might actually be a shame to waste such a good car. Some coileys and fat rims might go down well but then I am that kind of person, the excellent body kit might be a little too much. (I cannot honestly believe I am saying this)
If you want compromise why not looking at letting someone who'd appreciate that one for what it is take it and get something else to stick the kit on?
Let's hear it for indecisiveness. Or not, your choice.

Tbh I'd choose a run of the mill mk2 for the bodykit - there'll be plenty of suitable cars that will become available over the next few months.
If they weren't readily available then feck it - mod away....

She'll make someone very, very happy! As for advice, I think all of the comments that have been made are very fair, but at the end of the day you have to do what feels right for you.
I wouldn't dream of making radical changes to Lily as she only has 56,000 on the clock and I feel attached to her as she is. I'll only make minor changes to her and they'll all be things that can be easily reversed. Yes, I know she's only a GT and there are still loads of them around, but I bought her because I really liked her.
Having said that, when I get myself sorted out and have some proper money in place I intend to buy a non-kitted MkII as a replacement for Project Poppy.
When I do that I'll be looking for the best I can get condition wise and I won't give a second's thought to changing it. The emphasis will be on what it is going to be and not what it is if you get my meaning.
Re: Where to draw the line? Advice needed.
If this can provide a good solid base for what you want to do then go for it. People have modified much nicer, rarer motors than this. Just look at that white Mk1 that was kicking around a few years ago.
