the lights on the dash flicker as do the car lights, this only happens with the engine running !
presume its the volt reg where abouts is it ?

Inside the alternator, accessible easily from the back of said alternator, 2 screws and it's out :) = an easy job to replace and not expensive (like ebay = http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK1-M ... 0834832279 )
Could also be the engine to body earth strap (though that usually makes for lazy starting too, but not always) that goes from under the battery to the gearbox. Check connections there.
