Hi folks this is the problem i have i can't get the big thing with the splines on off the end of the column to remove the contact ring and steering lock housing
i need to fit a new lock as my keys have jamed in the lock, the haynes says prise the lock washer from the inner column and remove the spring and contact ring i cant see any thing like this on mine?
please any tips welcome
Phil, what you have made should work if stiff enough. can you drip behind the collar rather than using mole grips? im guessing these just slide forwards when pressure is applied?
otherwise, you mentioned heat, but did you also give it a good few hits with a copper hammer and some penetrating fluid?
hope you get it off, i hate annoying bits like this which slow you down!
sory, also worth noting, its an adaptor to increase your steering wheel spline size. standard fitment after '87 i think? so if you need to chop it to remove it, you can just use a 17mm splined steering wheel instead. hopefully wont come to that though.
Thanks for the replys at least i know im doing the right thing now ive left if to soak overnight with penetrating fluid i'll se if it helps tomorrow trust me to have the one with this spline converter
cheers phil
I had tried the vice grip route, borrowed hydraulic pullers from work, heat gun, penetrating oil ect and couldn't get that F---ing spline off due to lack off grip. Invested in tool mentioned in the link above and had it off in ten seconds with no swearing. Available off flea bay.
If you have time on your hands stick with what you are doing, if you don't or are having no joy invest or borrow one of these tools and the job is done in no time!
With the tool you get the grip on the lip on the spline shaft and it makes all the difference.
a decent puller would have it off in no time, and if you haven't got one, is always a worthy addition to the garage.
however, yours should work, you just need good purchase behind the collar. is it possible to try extending the "wings" you have so they clamp behind the collar and not using mole grips?
I assume that the rod through the puller is small enough for the spline to slide over, but what is the purpose of the nut on the puller just above the spline?
