GT11 over Injection

Post by pfw »

Hi all

I have been looking for a nice late MK2 rocco for some time now and wanted an injection for i'ts extra power. I have however come a ccross a showroom 1991 GT11 which I am viewing in a couple of days. Can anyone tell me how these compare against he injection madels.

I don't mean what is on paper but how the car feels to drive, does it feel slower/smoother/rougher, what is the difference mid-range...car is running overhauled pierburg and has done approx 50K

Comments appreciated

Thanks

Just my humble opinion, but once you get a carb Scirocco up through the gears and into 4th and 5th, there is no real difference between the 'drive' of an injection and a properly sorted late model carburettor car (even with the Pierburg). Others may disagree.

Injection car has a bit more bhp and is more responsive in the low gears compared to a factory specification carburettor car, although I have also driven 1.8 manual Sciroccos with a weber conversion that have felt just as quick as their injection counterparts.

If the GT2 that you are going to see is as good as it sounds, then it will be a better car overall than an injection car that needs some attention. Although the mk2 Scirocco is not quite a rare car yet, I would advise buying on condition if you want a nice car with little work to do that should hold its value.

Don't forget the buying guides:

Hope this helps, good luck with the inspection/test drive

Thanks for response, does the weber make any difference over the pierburg...apart from i'ts simplicity.

Perceived wisdom states that the weber is a more responsive carb and many will tell you that the car performs better with a weber. Although don't turn your nose up at a correctly overhauled and set up Pierburg, they are good carbs when they work properly.

A correctly set up Pierburg is awesome and the acceleration is comparable with an injection. Trouble is a good pierburg is a rare beast but at 50k miles it should be ok if not messed with. Buy on body condition not carb as these can be changed easy, poor body condition is expensive and harder to sort out.

Bear in mind the Gti engine had a slightly more lairy cam shaft, so that will account for some of the extra grunt. but these can be retrofitted to the carb head easily.

i like the simplicity of the carbs, and dont really like the k-jet system. when it works, its amazing. but when it goes it just kills itself in my experience.

as mentioned though, go for the quality of the rest of the car. the drive from inj. to carb. wont make much difference but a rusty body will (to your wallet at least).

As above, all!. Don't view the car, take it for a long drive and get a feel. My GTII carb is quicker than my Mark 3 Golf GTI 2.0L injection 0-60 but wouldn't match it from 60+ or sitting at top speed 70- 100+ so easily on a private road or circuit. Webber carbs transform your Rocco, the acceleration, reliability and 0-60 is great. It depends what your after. A car for looks and short journeys or a motorway cruiser. Take it for a long drive, and then a drive around town in traffic and then choose. Good Luck.

Everyone gonna have their own opinion and experience. Have to agree with whiteshark, a rocco is a drivers car.

I've an injection rocco and to be honest wouldn't have anything else, performance and fuel economy is outstanding.

I've driven a good few other roccos too, low mile pierburgs, and a few webberd 1.8s. For me all carb'd roccos should have a webber. I drove eamons old one and it was outstanding (Red GT2 with storm leather H***URR reg I think possibly had inj cam fitted ) went like stink and easy run. I found the webbered cars a lot nippier than the inj, but sink the boot in injection and they'll wipe the smile of most modern cars!

End of the day, it's a rocco it'll be cool, and they are a superb car!

My two pence worth =

I have had both and I now have two Pierburg carb ones and am very happy with them.
True the injection cars fetch more but if you are intending to keep it that ain't an issue.
The injected cars are harder to fix when they go wrong.
The injected cars I have driven do simply "go faster" and driven carefully will give more MPG.

Re Webbers v Pierburg, Personally, having tried both, I find a well maintained Peirburg to be better at pulling away, low end torque than the webber, and gives better MPG. (I took off the Webber that came with our K reg one and put a scrap yard Pierburg (off a Golf actually) on = it was better all round) just imho of course :)
