Lower strut brace

Hello all
I think i am being stupid :stupid: here but does the mk1 golf lower strut brace fits a mk2 rocco. I am about 80% sure they do fit but I need someone to tell me 100%.

If anyone is looking for cheap lower strut braces look on demon tweeks website I think they are about £29 :cool:
That is for OMP make to so not a unamed brand
Actually has anyone fitted the OMP ones and are they are ok?

sorry for the exceptionally dim question .. but are these difficult to fit? and what tools would I need to do so .. other than a couple of axle stands :chill:

Front lower is a pain mate. Obviously, the wishbone bolts are on tight as you dont want them comming off. Prob need a blowtorch to heat them up to get them off first. I was lucky and used a mates ramp and air tools to do mine.

You just need a rachet and socket to get the two bolts off tho, sorry Rohan, forget what size the bolts are.

The front hinge bolts are M12 x 90mm hex head bolts, 1.5 mm pitch. You'll need a 19mm spanner/socket. Be careful not to strip the captive bolt like the haynes maual says, otherwise it'll cost you a bomb to have someone fix it. You really need a torque wrench to do them back up so they don't come undone, i think it's 110Nm.

Wouldn't a mechanic throw it on for a tenner? Surely it's a 5 minute job when all the tools are to hand (like in a garage)? That's what I'm hoping.

Depends how well you know and get on with your mechanic :!:

They are not difficult to fit, but you do have to be careful that you do not strip the captive nut when re-inserting the bolt.

You need to ensure that when you re-fit the bolts that the wishbone bush is central so that you can insert the bolt and start tightening it up by hand. If you cannot do the bolt up with your fingers for a few turns then do NOT try and force it with a socket. Re-align the wishbone bush and try again.

A TOP TIP I was given, is to insert a bolt in its thread and turn it anti-clockwise slowly until you feel the threads engage, then start to screw it in with fingers before using the socket.

Also, although you can coat the shaft of the bolt with copper ease or similar, to help stop it rusting in the bush sleeve, you should NOT coat the threads, as I understand this changes the torque settings. Coated threads torqued up to 100 nm in this case, will actually be torqued up to a much higher setting and will increase the risk of stripping the captive thread.

When finally torquing up the bolts, make sure that you have the cars weight on the wheels.

Make sure that you re-fit the lock washer under the bolt head the correct way round - the concave surface should be against the wishbone and the convex surface against the bolt head.

VW recommend that a new bolt (10.9 tensile strength) and a new lock washer should always be used.

Sorry to bring this back up again, but wheres the best place to buy one of these and whats the best brand in peoples opinions.

The OMP one is £33 delivered on ebay :

Rohan, totally recomend a rear brace mate, car definatly feels better with one on.

Check prices on rally design and strutbracer too bud for comparrison before buying :good:
