Well this is unusual

Post by rickee »

Strange one for you:

Driving along happy as Larry (assuming Larry is overloaded with stress, driving in the rain and late for work) a car coming the other way flashes me to say that my high beams are on. I check the dash light (its very dim for some reason) and see that they are right, so I flick the left stalk to switch to dip beam.

right at that point the wipers stopped, the blower stopped and I found out later, the headlights went out. I was only about 300 yards from work, so I carried on to the office.

So at lunch I have a look at this, yep all those systems dead as a dodo. Except when you turn the lights on, pull the left stalk and hold it at the flash point, then everything works as normal.

:S

I'm thinking either Load reduction relay, Wiring fault in the power supply to the main dash loom (stereo and amp still work but they have their own supply. Clock and warning lights work and indicators work. MFA works as much as it always does, the speed sensor is kaput) or ignition switch fault. Its the "everything comes back on when I hold the lights on Main beam" thing that is confusing me. Does that re-route the power or something? Anyone had anything similar?

I think that problems with earthing can sometimes cause a problem like this. If the earth strap between the bulkhead and the rocker cover is not doing its job, it can cause similar symptoms to those you describe.
