special engine removal tools?

Before I go in and butcher up my engine trying to get it out, how far will I get before I get stuck and then have to put it all back together to go to a shop to buy a special vag tool?

Or will I be pleasantly suprised and they come out like a dream?

Only special tool you'll need is a hacksaw blade to cut the sieved bolts in the side engine mounts.

The only special tool you will need, and it will save your back, is an engine hoist.

From experience i've always found it easier to lower the engine and box onto the floor (resting on something suitable such as on old tyre). Then flip the front engine mount bracket (the one that bolts to the front chassis panel) vertically and use that to lift the car up so you can slide the engine out from under the car easily.

And loosen the bolt in the pulley side mount first when you get to the engine/box mounts. Makes your life much easier. But do not remove it until you have taken the strain of the engine with the hoist.

Not a special tool as such but, speaking from experience(or lack of it) get some labels and tie them to parts/cables you've disconnected and write what it is/where it goes.

good shout there... and to save rounding them make sure you lightly tap that multi-spline bit in with a hammer to get it right in ;)

ive had a fair few vag engines in an out at my garage as we pretty much specialise on pre 95 watercooled vw's

Alternatively the engine and box can be dropped with the driveshafts, wishbones and suspension still attached. Heavy and awkward but easy enough. Slacken the hub nuts off before doing so and unbolt the brake calipers.

Cheera guys, was kind of looking for something like a security torx bit or other stuff like that. So thats a small relief.

Autotoad: you answered my next question with lowering the car on the engine, I did it with minis wasn't sure if the rocco was too heavy or the overhang at the back too big. Thanks.! :D

there are 2 spring steel clamps that hold the exhaust downpipe on that are a pain you can ping them off with a big screwdriver bit will need to use rope and a bit of long tube underneath to lever them open to get them back on (shure there are other methods people have tho)

An exhaust clamp can be used for those ****ing exhaust clamps, put the bottom part of the clamp below the nuts, then wind the nuts down to open the clamps up.
